Social Emotional Learning / Satchel Pulse

Ohio's K-12 Social and Emotional Learning Standards
are provided by grade bands (kindergarten-grade 3, grades 3-5, middle grades and high school) and provide a continuum of development across five competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. The social and emotional learning standards are for all students, kindergarten through grade 12, with the understanding that each child develops at his or her own pace and may excel in one set of skills while struggling in another.

How does Satchel Pulse work?

Satchel Pulse is an easy-to-use assessment with 25 simple questions.

Students use the assessment to rate their self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship, and responsible decision-making skills.

Social Emotional Learning is not a way of treating or diagnosing mental health conditions. The role of social emotional learning in the classroom is in building relationships and creating opportunities for all students to learn and practice skills that serve them well in school and life. This does not replace mental health providers or therapeutic responses for children who need them. Social emotional learning is not therapy - but a universal, preventative support for every student.

Where does this information go?

Satchel Pulse Skills conforms with the data regulations that apply to all educational service providers. These laws stringently protect all children and their personal data. Satchel Pulse does not share sensitive or identifying student information with any other parties. Data that is collected is not used by Satchel Pulse in any way and is completely wiped from their system when students leave the district (i.e. graduate), or if we, the district, discontinue use altogether. The data that is collected from these initial assessments simply helps us at the school to provide any support that a student may need with developing life-readiness skills and helps to plan school-wide Social Emotional Learning activities based on the students’ strengths and areas for growth.

Per Ohio Revised Code, families may choose to have their student excused from Social Emotional Learning activities.  If you do NOT wish to have your student participate in the SLSD Satchel Pulse Skills Assessment / curriculum, you must sign and return this form, indicating your refusal to grant permission to your student’s school’s Main Office. The refusal must be received by the school by Monday, October 23, 2023.
