HJS Update

Posted on: September 29, 2023
Update

It has been a busy couple of weeks at Harrison Junior School and we wanted to provide our families with an update from HJS.

Our Mission

For our new families (and old families) Harrison Junior School and Southwest Local School District operate under the same mission.  Our mission is Academic and Social Growth for all students; every day.  To achieve this, we use our core values of Trust, Respect, Ownership & Leadership in an effort for our students to achieve our mission daily.  With this in mind, please know that the focus of our parent emails will not only focus on up to date information for our students, but also sharing items that pertain specifically to our mission and our core values.

Conference Sign Ups

Parents, we are very excited to offer our first conference night of the year for our families.  Our first conference night is October 5th.  To sign up for conference, please go online and sign up at the following link:  https://southwestlocalschooldistrict.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=78934

If there are no more slots available, our teachers will work to connect with you either over the phone or by setting up a meeting during their plan time.  Teachers can be contacted via phone by calling the school at 513-367-4831 or via email at firstname.lastname@southwestschools.org.

In addition, as we close out the first quarter, we will be sending home emails, phone calls, and text messages for students each Friday for the next two weeks.  If your child has an “F” in a class, the most likely reason is a result of missing work.  Please contact those teachers directly and check Progressbook to access that information.  If you are having trouble logging into Progressbook, please take a moment to contact michelle.imsicke@southwestschools.org who will assist you in getting logged in to Progressbook.

7th and 8th Grade Dance Date

Our first dance for 7th and 8th  will take place on Friday, October 13th from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.  The theme for the dance will be a Pink Out to align with the Varsity Football Student theme for that night as well!  This dance is for 7th and 8th Grade students only from Harrison Junior School.  Students on social probation as a result of a suspension or ASA assignment during first quarter are not eligible to attend.  Tickets are $5 at the door (cash only) and we will have concessions available at an additional cost.

100% Student Involvement

Our goal remains to get 100% of our students involved in opportunities within our community or at Harrison Junior School.  We firmly believe that involvement outside of school is a key to a successful student.  With this in mind, we will continue to share in our emails school groups and community groups that our students can connect with.  If you run an outside group, please feel free to reach out and we may share it with our families.

With this in mind, Harrison Lacrosse, which is a local community group (not an official school group)  has asked us to share the following message:

After a successful inaugural season, Harrison Youth Lacrosse (HYL), is excited to add a Junior High team to our Organization! HYL is committed to offer the youth of Harrison an opportunity to experience the excitement of "the fastest game on two feet." Our mission is to build a strong community program by focusing on fundamentals, competition, and FUN!

Teams for the 2024 Season include GIRLS AND BOYS: Pre-K Coed, K-2 Boys, K-2 Girls, 3-4 Boys, 3-4 Girls, 5-6 Boys, 5-6 Girls, 7-8 Boys, 7-8 Girls. (All subject to interest and available coaching)

For up to date information and registration follow our Facebook page : Harrison Youth Lacrosse or Instagram: harrison_youth_lax

In addition, to the new community lacrosse program, below is information regarding Harrison Community Softball.  Again, this is a community group that is outside of the guise of the school, but one that our students can get involved in.

Harrison Club Fastpitch Softball will be holding open tryouts for any 7th or 8th Grade HJS students on Saturday, September 30th from 12:00 – 3:00 or after school on Thursday, October 5th from 4:00-6:30 P.M.

Students interested in trying out can pick up a packet from the Harrison Junior School office.  Registrations and waivers must be filled out to a parent prior to trying out.

Town Hall

Did you miss the Town Hall?  It is not too late to have your voice heard!  Our next Town Hall will take place at Harrison High School on October 10th starting at 6:00 in the Harrison High School Commons.

A Message from Our PTO

We have been busy with the first month of school and preparing for the upcoming Craft and Vendor Show on October 14th!

Speaking of the Craft and Vendor Show - we have our first opportunity for parents AND students to help!  We have a lot of different opportunities during our Craft & Vendor Show for students to earn service hours.  New this year, we have decided that any ADULT (parent, grandparent, guardian, etc.) that volunteers at the craft show for a 3-hour shift will earn $25 for the Harrison Junior School or High School group of their choice (i.e. Engineering, DECA, HOSA, Music/Band, CAT Boosters, etc.).  The Adults MUST BE a paid member of the PTO.  We are trying to give back to the student groups, and promote service.  Students are not able to earn the $25, as they will be receiving service hours for their time.   To make this event successful, we need lots of volunteers.  Please consider volunteering with your child.  You can sign up here: Craft Show Volunteers

If you'd like to invite your friends and family to the Craft and Vendor Show, you can share this link: Harrison Jr. Sr. High PTO Craft and Vendor Show  you can also post the event to your page!  You can start your holiday shopping early - we have over 100 vendors attending!
