Update

We have reached Thanksgiving Break and the halfway point of the second quarter!  A big thank you to everyone who joined us this weekend for our production of “Mary Poppins” and congratulations to Mrs. Purdy, Ms. Adams, our cast and crew, and all of our parent volunteers that made it happen.

As we head into the second half of the second quarter, please be sure that you are checking ProgressBook and please feel free to reach out to your student’s teachers as necessary.  Our expectation is that all phone calls/emails are returned within 24 business hours.

Please see below for some important information and updates.

Conference Night – Thurs 12/7
Our next conference night is Thursday, December 7.  Due to staff-wide training from 3:30 – 4:30, our conference time slots will be from 4:30 – 8:30.  We will email and post the link to register for conferences on Wednesday, November 29.

Yearbook Update
Yearbooks for the 2022-2023 school year have arrived and we have been distributing them during lunch.  Graduates from the Class of 2023 and current students either on a college campus or an Oaks campus can pick up their yearbooks from the Main Office on school days between 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Senior Portrait Update
Senior Portrait session appointments at the high school have all been filled for November 30 and December 1. Any senior who has still not had their Senior Portraits taken by Executive Studios needs to make arrangements to visit Executive-Ritchie at their Downtown Cincinnati studio. You can make an appointment by calling 513-241-4959. Remember, only Executive-Ritchie photos will be used in the portrait section of the yearbook and on the class composite. All portraits should be taken by Friday, December 15.  Please email jane.hinterlong@southwestschools.org with any questions.

Senior Reminder – Cap & Gown Order Deadline Approaching
This is just a reminder to families of Class of 2024 graduates that the last day to order a cap & gown without paying a $20.00 late fee is Monday, December 4.  To order, please visit www.graduateserviceinc.com or reach out to Graduate Services at 513-272-5890.  We also have some order packets still available in the Main Office.

Fall Art Show Now Underway
The Annual High School/Junior School Fall Art Show is now open at the Harrison Branch of the Public Library, now through Friday, December 15.  Please stop by to see some amazing art work from our very talented students!  A big thank you to our Art Department for working with our students and for assembling this wonderful display!

College Credit Plus Information Session
Any student that is interested in participating in the State of Ohio’s College Credit Plus needs to attend the Information Session with a parent/guardian on December 7th at 6:00 PM in the Activity Center auditorium.  If you are unable to attend, you will need to schedule a meeting with your student’s guidance counselor during school hours.

AP Parent Night
Are you interested in having your child take an AP class, but not sure what Advanced Placement (AP) is all about?  Please attend our AP Parent meeting during our next conference night on December 7th at 7:00 PM in the Activity Center auditorium.  Please contact Steve Barnes at 513-728-8430 with any questions.

Financial Aid Night
William Henry Harrison High School will be sponsoring its annual Financial Aid Meeting for Parents on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, beginning at 6:30 PM in the Harrison High School Makerspace.

At this meeting, parents will receive an overview of the financial aid process.  Brent Shock, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success at Miami University, will be on hand to answer questions and explain the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filing process.

Be sure to mark your calendars now for December 13th!  This will be the only financial aid meeting of this type in the area this year.  Questions concerning this meeting can be directed to Steve Barnes, counselor at the high school, at 513-367-4169.

Harrison Mayor’s Community Fund
Applications for holiday assistance through the Harrison Mayor’s Community Fund will be accepted and reviewed during the month of November.  Assistance is available to any family residing in the Southwest Local School District.  Please see the attached flyer for additional information.

Community Engagement Survey
We are still looking to collect your feedback, as we did throughout this past year’s Town Hall process.  If you haven’t yet completed our survey, please do so here.  We want to hear from as many families and community members as possible!

Tutoring is Available
The National Honor Society has started their weekly tutoring sessions.  Every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 7:15 AM, the National Honor Society students will be available for free tutoring for anyone who needs help.  There’s no need to sign up in advance, just show up to Room 104 (Mrs. Siemer’s room), and let the NHS students help you with any subject you need.  Please reach out to Mrs. Siemer if you have any questions.

Check Out The Paw Print – Harrison’s Online Student News Site
Mrs. Evanson’s Journalism class has been working hard, and they have launched an online news site entitled “The Paw Print.”  Please be sure to check it out at https://harrisonpawprint.org/.

School Fees
School fees are now posted to our students’ accounts.  Directions for how to log on and pay student fees are attached to this email.  Thank you for your attention to this information!

Junior/Senior College Visits
Seniors received instruction on how to complete transcript requests in Naviance on Thursday, August 31st during Advisory.  The slide show is available for viewing on both the Guidance page of the school’s website and on the Class of 2024 Teams page. Students at Diamond Oaks/Scarlet Oaks will be receiving the same instruction during their individual meetings when their Harrison counselor visits the Oaks buildings over the next few weeks.

Juniors and Seniors interested in visiting a college campus can sign up on that college’s website. We need a parent note stating the day and time of the visit. Please bring this note to the guidance office several days prior to your visit.

Junior ACT
Any junior that has completed Algebra 2 and is college bound is encouraged to take the 12/9/23 ACT.  Students can register at The ACT Ohio.

Naviance has free test preparation that all students have access to on their Naviance account.   **Juniors do NOT have to sign up for the state sponsored test that is given during school at the end of February.  It is recommended, however, that students take the ACT at least twice to earn their optimal score.  Students/parents do have to register on their own for that 2nd test that is not school sponsored.
