HJS Summer Update #1

Posted on: June 9, 2020
Update

It is a Big Week for the Summer as we close out 2020 and begin the process of getting ready to OPEN for 2020-2021.

There is a lot that we want to update you on, so please take a moment to read this email.  We have included our incoming 6th Grade families on this email.  For those families, WELCOME to Harrison Junior School.  We are excited to have your student as a part of our school!

Closing out 2020
None of us wanted to end the School Year on Remote Learning, and our hope is to be back in session come August 18th with our students.  Know that it may look different, but we are going to do everything we can to ensure the Safety of our students and support them through the process.  Our teachers, front office, leadership, café staff, and custodians are working to ensure we have plans and back up plans for every possible scenario.  Many families want answers today, but to be honest, we don’t have answers because we do not know what our world will look like in August.  Just know that we work and discuss plans daily and will continue to communicate with families when final decisions have been made.  Know that our goal and desire is to have kids back full time in the Fall.  Also know, that we will do everything we can do to ensure the safety of our students.

We recorded the clips of our Awards Program for our students.  It makes us proud to see the success of so many of our students.  This week, we will be mailing home different awards to our students that they have earned.  Please be on the lookout.  Our awards program video will be made available via social media and email links once it is complete.

Finally, Laptop collection has taken place.  We still have about 50 laptops that have not been turned in and accounted for.  Families will have until Monday, June 22nd to turn in the laptops.  Any laptops not turned in at that point will be billed to the family.  Laptops can be dropped off in our office from 8:00 – 3:00 each day.

Items on the Horizon

As I said, we are busy planning for the upcoming school year.  This past week, most of our teachers have participated in professional development unpacking the Ohio Standards, lesson planning, assessment literacy, social-emotional learning and more.  I want to commend the members of our staff who have taken part in this process.  They have done an incredible job, and we look forward to these items being put into place for the upcoming year.

At this time, all 7th and 8th Grade students have received their schedules.  All schedule change requests have been turned in, and we are working through the final changes.  This fall, all students will remain in the classes assigned.  Our incoming 6th Grade students will receive their schedules at Camp Junior Wildcat which will take place in early August.

Once again, this year our students will be receiving laptops to take home with them.  Laptops will be issued to students early in the School Year, but will NOT be issued prior to the start of school.  We will spend ample time early in the school year reviewing internet safety protocols as we look at this as a part of Social Growth.

Summer School is happening for initial credit only.  Students entering the High School can sign up for Summer Physical Education (Gym) or for Health.

Athletics

Be on the lookout this week for information regarding Athletics (this will go to our incoming 7th and 8th Grade parents only) later this week.
