Looking at the Week Ahead

Posted on: December 1, 2023
Update

The Holiday Food & Clothing Drive runs December 4-8! For those new to SLSDthis is a 20+ year tradition in which the school’s partner with the City of Harrison to assist those in need locally! Our District goal is over 35K food and clothing items! Last year, we collected over 32K! Let’s again show the community how passionate we are about helping those in need this holiday season! The flier for the event is attached! The homeroom class with the most donated items will receive a class pizza party when we come back from the holidays. Students are asked to take all items to their homerooms first to give their teacher a count and then place them in the appropriate labeled boxes on the stage in the cafeteria.

Don’t forget you can now follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Please make sure you are members of the correct sites. There were several “unofficial” sites created and we are trying to inactivate them. I have been posting a lot of pictures of events happening at Harrison Elementary. Feel free to send them out to family and friends. This is a great way to keep up on events at school.

We have had a great start to the new school year. The students are demonstrating our Four Core Values – Trust, Respect, Ownership and Leadership – throughout the day.

The Holiday Food & Clothing Drive

The Southwest Local School District Holiday Food & Clothing Drive takes place December 4-8. The Drive runs from Monday through Friday. Students are asked to bring their donated non-perishable food items and clothing to their homeroom teachers to get credit. The classroom with the most items donated will be awarded a pizza party for their entire class. Some of the most needed items are peanut butter, jelly, canned soup, canned ravioli or spaghetti, and spaghetti sauce (no glass) and cereal.  Highlighted items in the previous sentence will be credited as two items versus one (example one container of peanut butter will count as two items donated). See attached flyer for further information. If you have any questions, please call the school office. To help encourage participation for the clothing and food drive the school district has designated a special dress-up day each day next week. See calendar below:

Monday – Comfy Cozy Day – wear sweatshirts and sweatpants

Tuesday – Candy Cane Day – wear red or white or both colored clothes

Wednesday – Holiday Helpers Day – wear something with elves, reindeer, Santa, snowman etc

Thursday – Crazy Sock Day – wear winter or holiday socks

Friday – Ugly Sweater or Holiday Shirt Day – wear your favorite ugly holiday sweater or shirt

Parking

When dropping off your child in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon please make sure everybody is utilizing the crosswalk. Safety is our number one goal and by utilizing the crosswalk to get across the street students will be safe.

Please do not block the crosswalk area and be especially careful coming into the parking lot off Broadway. Students and parents walk across this area and have the right-away. When entering the parking lot please make sure that no students and parents are coming across the crosswalk.

When in queue to enter the parking lots, please do not block the bus entrance on Elm Street. Parking on Broadway is a perfect location to meet older children after school versus entering the pick-up queue.

Please pull up to the next car when picking up your child in the drop-off area.

Please feel free to park your cars in any available space at dismissal versus waiting in the pull-up line. Cars waiting in cue are blocking other cars from exiting the parking lot.

Smiles Programs – From the School Nurse

Our school has partnered with Smiles Programs. The mobile dentist will be offering in-school dental care. They will be at Harrison Elementary School on December 4, 6, 7, and 8. Please see the attached flyer for additional information and details on registering your child(ren). If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Kinett, our school nurse - 513-367-4161.

PTO Planning Meetings

PTO meetings this school year will take place on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria. The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 22nd, 2024.

You can now join PTO. Just your small membership fee of $10 helps us provide services for the kids! This does not require you to volunteer or attend meetings. It is all up to you how much you would like to be involved. If you have any questions, please reach out to a board member.

Joining the PTO is not a huge commitment and often looks like 1-3 service hours a year with opportunities in the evenings, during the school day or can be as simple as signing up to send in cookies for an event.  Everyone doing a little adds up to a LOT for our kids.
