Harrison Elementary Update

Posted on: August 26, 2022
Update

Another great week. The weather has been cooperating and the students have been able to enjoy the sunshine and playground equipment.

Next week, on Wednesday, will be our Fall Picture Day. All students will get their pictures taken whether they are purchasing a packet or not. These pictures are used for the yearbook and students’ file. If you need ordering information, please contact the school office.

All Harrison Elementary students and staff were given a Harrison t-shirt on Wednesday or Thursday. These shirts are intended to be worn on our monthly Spirit Days (last Friday of each month). These shirts also have our 4 Core Values printed on the back. Periodically, please ask your child what each of these values are and how they can show that they are leading their lives by these values each day. It was wonderful seeing all of the students at school today in their new green Harrison T-shirts!!!

Don’t forget you can now follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Please make sure you are members of the correct sites. There were several “unofficial” sites created and we are trying to inactivate them. I have been posting a lot of pictures of events happening at Harrison Elementary. Feel free to send them out to family and friends. Pictures from this week are being added to both accounts. This is a great way to keep up on events in the school.

We have had a great start to the new school year. The students are demonstrating our Four Core Values – Trust, Respect, Ownership and Leadership – throughout the day.

Have a great weekend!

Parking

When dropping off your child in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon please make sure everybody is utilizing the crosswalk. Safety is our number one goal and by utilizing the crosswalk to get across the street students will be safe. The back of the school should not ever be used as a drop-off or pick-up location due to the number of busses and daycare vans that come into the area.

When in cue to enter the parking lots, please do not block the bus entrance on Elm Street. Parking on Broadway is a perfect location to meet older children after school versus entering the pick-up cue.

Please pull up to the next car when picking up your child in the drop-off area.

Please do not block the crosswalk area and be especially careful coming into the parking lot off Broadway. Students and parents walk across this area and have the right-away.

Please feel free to park your cars in any available space at dismissal versus waiting in the pull-up line. Cars waiting in cue are blocking other cars from exiting the parking lot.

Building Character

Character Education is teaching children and adults in a manner that will help them develop and model various core values that shape our hearts, minds, and choices. Southwest Local School District’s Core Values: Trust, Respect, Ownership, and Leadership. Harrison Elementary School also acknowledges other various character traits that reflect our core values and build on them throughout the school year. Listed below are the Character Traits we will be working on this year. More information about each of these traits will be included in this email blast in the weeks to come.

September: Leadership

October: Trust

November: Respect

December: Ownership

January: Responsibility

February: Fairness

March: Compassion

April: Empathy

May: Gratitude

September’s Character Trait is Leadership. Leadership takes place when students show others how to act, setting a good example. Please reinforce these monthly traits at home and throughout the month.

School Pictures

School pictures will take place on WEDNESDAY, August 31st. Corrected ordering information was sent home last week with a reminder today. Additional forms are in the school office.

Families do not need to purchase packets, but all students will have their pictures taken. These pictures are used for the school yearbook and records.

Cafeteria

Just a friendly reminder that breakfast and lunch meals through the cafeteria are NOT free this year. Students must bring money to purchase a breakfast or school lunch. If you believe that you should qualify for free or reduced meals, proper paperwork must be submitted. If you have any questions, please call the school office. Lunchroom charge letters will be going home next week.

PTO Planning Meetings

PTO meetings this school year will take place on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the school cafeteria. The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 12th.

You can now join PTO online simply by clicking the link below. Just your small membership fee of $10 helps us provide services for the kids! This does not require you to volunteer or attend meetings. It is all up to you how much you would like to be involved. If you have any questions, please reach out to a board member.

Joining the PTO is not a huge commitment and often looks like 1-3 service hours a year with opportunities in the evenings, during the school day or can be as simple as signing up to send in cookies for an event.  Everyone doing a little adds up to a LOT for our kids.

The PTO Driven Coffee fundraiser has kicked off and you should have received an order form from your child. Some of these forms might have gone home late so we are extending the deadline to turn them in. Please have them turned in by 8/31/22. If you never received a form, there are extras in the school office. Please feel free to email us if you'd like another one sent home with your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to our PTO rep Shelly Nolan for information. Her email is snolan1@live.com

Hope to see you soon!

Bus Passes

Due to the number of children riding the bus this year, NO bus passes will be written for students wishing to go home with another student. Please make arrangements for transportation once the students have arrived home. If bus situations change throughout the year, please complete a new bus route information sheet, and submit it to our office to be processed at District Office.

N*A*M*E*S

Please make sure your child’s name is printed somewhere on his/her lunch boxes. Many boxes are the same and after lunch it is very hard deciding whose lunch box is who’s at the end of the day. If your child’s lunch is in a brown bag, please also include his/her name. Items are already beginning to accumulate in the Lost and Found.

Magazine and Cookie Dough Fundraiser

On Thursday, September 8th we kicked-off our annual Magazine and Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Students will be given their ordering/selling information that day. Please look at the flyers and catalogues that are sent home with your child on that day. Profits from this fundraiser helps to provide needed items throughout the school and classrooms. If you need additional order forms, please contact the office. The fundraiser concludes on Tuesday, September 22nd. Thanks for your help!!!

Online Student Forms

Don’t forget to complete your child’s online forms. If you have questions or need help with this, please contact the office. We have staff members and computers throughout the day available to help you with this process. Please make sure you have all needed information (phone numbers, addresses, medical information) handy before beginning. If information (email addresses, phone numbers, addresses etc.) change throughout the year, please make sure you update this information in your child’s account.
