Harrison Elementary Update

Posted on: September 20, 2020

Another great week behind us. Student pictures on Tuesday went on flawlessly along with opportunities for virtual students to come in later that evening to get their pictures taken. We are hoping to have picture packets back towards the end of October. Retake day is scheduled for November 4th.

Friday afternoon you should have received an email detailing a SLSD Health Alert. Harrison Elementary along with the Junior and Senior High Schools reported documented cases of Covid-19. Our District contact tracer and the building principals alerted those students who needed to be quarantined. Please look in your email messages for the letter explaining the situation. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we move forward.

Don’t forget you can now follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Please make sure you are members of the correct sites. There were several “unofficial” sites created and we are trying to inactivate them. I have been posting a lot of pictures of events happening at Harrison Elementary. Feel free to send them out to family and friends. Pictures from this week are being added to both accounts. This is a great way to keep up on events in the school.

We have had a great start to the new school year. Dealing with extreme hot temperatures has been our major challenge so far. The students are demonstrating the Four Core Values – Trust, Respect, Ownership and Leadership– throughout the day.

Have a great weekend!

Student Arrivals

Student arrivals continue to be fantastic. Thank you for your flexibility and patience. Earlier this month an email went out to parents asking them to follow the schedule below for drop off. We totally understand that situations change and that the drop off times listed below might need to be adjusted. If possible please try to keep to the schedule but know that there is wiggle room for earlier or later times.

8:45 – Early drop off (parents getting to work)
8:55 – Families with last names of A – F
9:00 – Families with last names of G – N
9:05 – Families with last names of O - Z

Magazine and Cookie Dough Fundraiser

On Tuesday, September 22nd we kicked-off our annual Magazine and Cookie Dough Fundraiser. Students will be given their ordering/selling information  that day. Please take a look at the flyers and catalogues that are sent home with your child. Profits from this fundraiser helps to provide needed items throughout the school and classrooms. If you need additional order forms please contact the office. The fundraiser concludes on Wednesday, October 14th. Thanks for your help!!! We encourage all virtual students and their families to participate in this fundraiser. Please stop by the school office to pick up your fundraiser packets after Tuesday.

Virtual Students’ Recorders and Novels

If you child is taking their classes virtually and are in kindergarten, first or second grade your recorders are in and available in the school office. Many parents have already stopped by but several instruments are still waiting to be picked up. Those fourth grade families who have not picked up their child’s novel Bud Not Buddy may also come to school to get their copy of the novel.

Face Covering Clarification

Neck gaiters meet the definition of a “FACE COVERING” per the Governor’s mandate. Yes, we are allowing them. No, they are not the best version of a face covering, but allowable. Cloth masks or paper masks that we are handing out are a much better option, but we are allowing gaiters. Students and staff have been real troopers this week wearing their masks throughout the building. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences are soon approaching (October 20th and 22nd). Parent – Teacher conferences will be held virtually and not face to face this fall. Registration codes to schedule your conference through Signup Genius will be sent out shortly.

Playground Equipment

Thanks to all of the wonderful families who found items on our Amazon Wish list for playground equipment. Each grade level was given their bag of items this morning. Thank you Harrison PTA for getting this all together for our students. If you are still interested in purchasing some supplies for recess, the link is located below.

PTA Planning Meetings

The PTA would like to invite you to join them for their monthly planning meeting. Planning meetings take place the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm in the school library or cafeteria depending on the number of people attending for social distance purposes.

In your child’s school folder this week you should have noticed an invitation to join the PTA. Please consider doing this and getting involved. Due to COVID-19 many of the usual planned activities have been postponed but your support is greatly needed.

Joining the PTA is not a huge commitment and often looks like 1-3 service hours a year with opportunities in the evenings, during the school day or can be as simple as signing up to send in cookies for an event.  Everyone doing a little adds up to a LOT for our kids.

Hope to see you soon!
Harrison PTA

Bus Passes

Due to the limited number of children riding the bus this year, NO bus passes will be written for students wishing to go home with another student. Please make arrangements for transportation once the students have arrived home. If bus situations change throughout the year please complete a new bus route information sheet and submit it to our office to be processed at District Office.

Please make sure your child’s name is printed somewhere on his/her lunch boxes. Many boxes are the same and after lunch it is very hard deciding whose lunch box is whose at the end of the day. If your child’s lunch is in a brown bag please also include his/her name

Student Fees

Just a friendly reminder that all students fees need to be paid by September 22nd.

Online Student Forms

Don’t forget to complete your child’s online forms. If you have questions or need help with this please contact the office. We have staff members and computers throughout the day available to help you with this process. Please make sure you have all needed information (phone numbers, addresses, medical information) handy before beginning. If information (email addresses, phone numbers, addresses etc.) change throughout the year, please make sure you update this information in your child’s account.

When dropping off your child in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon please make sure everybody is utilizing the crosswalk. Safety is our number one goal and by utilizing the crosswalk to get across the street students will be safe. The back of the school should not ever be used as a drop-off or pick-up location due to the number of busses that come into the area.
