WHHHS Update

Posted on: September 8, 2023
Update

We are almost to the halfway point in the first quarter, and through the first four weeks of the school year, 238 different students have been recognized through our PBIS program for demonstrating at least one of our core values of Trust, Respect, Ownership and Leadership!  Homecoming is on the horizon and we will be preparing for our first round of parent-teacher conferences.

Please see below for some important information and updates.

Reminder About Student Schedules
Please note that students received a copy of their schedule during the last month of the 2022-2023 school year, and any requests to change a class were due before June 1.  Currently, we are unable to make any course changes.

Ordering/Delivery of Outside Food
The Southwest Local School District participates in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for our qualifying students.  As part of the provision of the agreement, we do not allow vending machines to be used or outside food service to the building during lunchtime.  Food from an outside restaurant, pizza service, etc. may not be delivered until after 2:55.  Food cannot be delivered or brought into the building without administrative approval within program compliance.  A parent/guardian may bring in a homemade lunch and drop it off for their student.  This information is in our Student Handbook and we stressed it in our grade level assemblies on the first day of school, yet we are now seeing an increase with this; we greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

ProgressBook Information
As we get further into the first quarter, please be sure to review your student’s grades in ProgressBook.  You and your student can also set up alerts for low grades and missing assignments as well.  Please feel free to contact your student’s teacher, guidance counselor, or an administrator with any questions.  Our expectation is that grades are updated in ProgressBook once per week and that any email or phone call is returned within 24 business hours.

The Frontline ProgressBook Parent & Student Mobile App v1.0.2 is now available in both app stores.

This release will now support the ability to receive push notifications for Missing Assignment and Low Mark alerts once upgraded. Once upgraded, the app will prompt parents and students to enable push notifications on their device if they wish to receive them. This update also contains enhancements to the calendar view which allows users to further filter and collapse the calendar to see more assignments for a chosen day.

Parents and students will be prompted to update their app on their device.

Here is a video on how to set up Missing Assignment and Low Assignment Marks Notifications in the Frontline Parent and Student mobile app v1.0.2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi5QanEAhoM

If you are experiencing problems accessing ProgressBook, please reach out parentaccess@southwestschools.org.

School Fees
School fees are now posted to our students’ accounts.  Directions for how to log on and pay student fees are attached to this email.  Thank you for your attention to this information!

Final Forms
As a school, we are now at 86% complete with our Final Forms.  This is an eleven percent increase from just two weeks ago!  Thank you to everyone who has logged in and updated their information for this school year.  If you have not done so yet, please log in to Final Forms and update your student’s forms. This is where we pull our information for communication purposes, so please be sure your information is up to date. This is also where you will go for instructions on how to access ProgressBook.

Town Hall Meetings Resume in September and October – Next Week at HJS
Last school year, we kicked off an organized districtwide engagement campaign with the purpose of listening to the community. Listening to YOU. We collected hundreds of survey responses and hosted three unique Town Hall events at our elementary schools that had excellent turnout from the community. We talked about important topics for our kids, staff, and district, such as school safety, academic excellence, school finance, and mental health resources. Reports and recaps of all these events can be found on our website, southwestschools.org/community.

We are excited to continue our focus on engaging with our entire community, to ensure the future of our school district reflects what our community wants.  Please click HERE to view a short video from Superintendent John Hamstra, recapping what we've accomplished so far and looking ahead to what we have on deck in the weeks to come.

This fall, we are going to continue our process of listening to the community - we can’t move forward as a district and provide the level of service your kids deserve without your input and involvement.  We encourage you to do a few things. First, if you haven’t already, click HERE to take our survey to make sure your voice is heard.  Second, click HERE to RSVP to one of our two fall Town Hall events. The first will take place at Harrison Junior School at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 14th.  The second will take place at Harrison High School at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 10th. We want to pack the buildings for these events, so make sure you RSVP ASAP.

We are fortunate to live in a community that cares so much about our schools and our students, and we want to hear from you on how we can continue to improve.

We look forward to seeing you at our Town Halls. Thank you.

School Communications – Mass Notification System
On Thursday, September 7 at approximately 4:30 PM, SLSD conducted a test of the School Messenger mass notification system.  School Messenger is used to communicate weather-related delays and closings, and other important information and reminders.

The test consisted of three parts.  You should have received a phone call, text message, and email.

If you have not received text messages previously from the number 675-87 (SLSD’s School Messenger Short Code), you will need to text the word YES to 67587 in order to opt-in to receive text messages.

If you registered your number in Final Forms, and sent the opt-in, you should have received a phone call and text.  If you did, you are all set and no further action is necessary.

If you did not receive the phone call, text message, and/or email by 9:00 PM on Thursday, September 7, please ensure that your information is up to date in Final Forms, and that you sent the opt-in text described above.  Please also ensure that you have not unsubscribed from School Messenger communications previously.

After completing those steps, you can click THIS LINK to submit information to aid us in troubleshooting the issue further.

As always, please don’t hesitate to call the school office if you have questions or need more information.

Junior/Senior College Visits
Any junior or senior interested in meeting with college representatives can sign up on Naviance. This is a great way to learn about colleges and if they are a good fit. We will have a variety of colleges visit Harrison High School throughout the school year.

Seniors will receive instruction on how to complete transcript requests in Naviance on Thursday, August 31st during homeroom.  Students at Diamond Oaks/Scarlet Oaks will be meeting for the same instruction in September, specific date TBA.

PTO/Booster Organizations
We would like to invite you to join the Harrison Junior/Senior High PTO as well as our Booster organizations.  You can visit https://harrisonjrsrpto.membershiptoolkit.com/home to join the PTO, https://harrisonwildcats.membershiptoolkit.com/Home to join the Athletic Boosters, https://www.harrisonmusicboosters.com/ to join the Music Boosters and the Harrison CAT Boosters’ page to support the Vocal and Drama programs.
