We are devastated to share with you that we have lost one of our Harrison High School teachers, Mr. Steve Coffman.

John Stephen “Steve” Coffman II graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and later earned a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Indianapolis, reflecting his lifelong dedication to learning, education, and helping others grow.

Before joining Southwest Local School District in 2004, Steve spent a decade teaching mathematics and making a positive impact on students at Indianapolis Public Schools, Delta High School, East Central High School, and South Dearborn High School.

During his time at Southwest Local School District, Steve taught at both Harrison Junior School and William Henry Harrison High School, where he taught a wide range of mathematics courses including 7th and 8th grade Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Algebra II CP, Statistics, Math Modeling and Reasoning, Math Applications, and Financial Math. Beyond the classroom, he dedicated countless hours to students through coaching and mentorship, serving as an Assistant Coach for Cross Country at Harrison Junior School, Assistant Coach for Softball and Cross Country at the High School, and Head Boys Basketball Coach at the High School.

Steve was known for his steady presence, passion for education, and unwavering commitment to students. He built meaningful relationships with both students and colleagues and was deeply respected for the patience, knowledge, and encouragement he brought to those around him.

In addition to his work in education, Steve also served as an Investment Advisor Representative with Coffman Wealth Management. In that role, he generously shared his expertise with many SLSD staff members, helping colleagues navigate financial planning and prepare for the future. His willingness to support others extended far beyond the classroom and reflected the kindness, generosity, and care that defined his life and career.

Many of our students and staff members are deeply impacted by this, as grief is an incredibly difficult experience to process. Our team has been working directly with the family to provide support since this tragedy occurred, and we want to provide support for our students and staff as well. Classes at Harrison High School and Harrison Junior School will be canceled tomorrow, Friday, May 1. The building will be open tomorrow during normal school hours for any students or staff members who wish to gather. Grief counselors and community support resources will be available from 9:00 AM – Noon for any student or staff member who needs to talk to someone. In addition, supports will also be in place at Harrison High School when classes resume on Monday.

If you have any questions or need additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to our School Counselors or Administrative team.

Please keep Steve’s family in your thoughts and prayers, along with his friends and colleagues at SLSD.
