SAFETY
COLD AND FLU SEASON
With the upcoming cold and flu season upon us, please remember to keep students home when they are sick to help prevent spread. Students must be free of fevers, vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours, without the use of medication, before returning to school. Please contact the school if your student will be out. Let's stay healthy and safe this winter!
SCHOOL DELAYS AND CLOSINGS
When inclement weather occurs, our school messaging system will be used to distribute information. You can also listen to local TV and radio stations for information on Southwest Local Schools. Any delay or closing is also posted to the school district website: www.southwestschools.org as well as on our Crosby Facebook page. Also, HALF-DAY KINDERGARTEN parents need to be advised that whenever school is delayed, AM Kindergarten is canceled.
ACADEMIC GROWTH
UPDATES REGARDING OHIO'S NEW LAW FOR DYSLEXIA SCREENING
All students in grades K-3 at Southwest Local School District will undergo dyslexia screening as part of Ohio law requirements. This non-intrusive process aims to identify early signs of dyslexia, and if your child is flagged, they may be given a Tier 2 Screener for further assessment and tailored support. This is not a comprehensive dyslexia assessment designed to diagnose your child with dyslexia. The screener is designed to identify areas of concern in specific components of reading that identify your child as being below or well below grade level expectations.
Students in SLSD will receive an initial screening through Aimsweb Plus. K-3 students are already taking this assessment three times a year (fall, winter, spring). Students who score in the 25th percentile or below on the winter administration of Aimsweb Plus, will then be given an additional assessment called the RAN. If your child scores in an at-risk range on the RAN, they will be given the PAST assessment to target areas for intervention. We will notify you if your child will be receiving interventions based on these screenings.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Teachers will be sending home information to schedule your winter conference. Conferences will take place on February 1 and 7. Teachers are happy to accommodate face-to-face, virtual, or phone conferences, whichever best fits your schedule.
SPELLING BEE
Winning fourth and fifth grade students from their class's spelling bees will be invited to participate in the Crosby Elementary Spelling Bee on January 16th at 1:30 p.m. Parents of students in the Bee will be invited to attend. All other 4th and 5th graders will be in the audience as well as the 3rd grade classes.
NWEA MAP TESTING
The winter administration of MAP will take place during the week of January 23-27th. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments during that week that will cause your child to miss school.
23-24 STUDENT FEES
All students in half day Kindergarten – 5th grade have a school fee set by the Board of Education, which is used to purchase educational materials and other items used by each student. The fee for the 2023-24 school year will be $70.00 ($60 + $10 tech fee). Full day kindergarten is tuition based. Deadline for payment of fees is October 2, 2023. Checks should be made payable to “Southwest Local School District”. Or you may log in to our Parent Portal https://mywildcats.me. Click on the 9 squares (top right of your screen) and click PayForIt.
