At their June 21 meeting, Southwest Local School District’s Board of Education voted to approve Mia Neckel as principal of Whitewater Valley Elementary School. Neckel, who previously served as Title 1 coordinator and instructional coach, has been with SLSD for 22 years, serving in a variety of roles.

She replaces Adam Lohbeck, who recently was named Director of Operations for the district.

“Everywhere Mia serves within our district, she makes a difference,” states Superintendent John C. Hamstra. “In her work as a teacher, through her time as Title I Coordinator and as an instructional coach, everywhere she works, there has been improvement and student growth. Her passion and dedication to our students is evident as is her devotion to providing quality education through professional development of our teachers and the use of technology to enhance curriculum.”

Neckel began her tenure with Southwest as a first-grade teacher at Hooven Elementary School. From 1999-2016, she taught at Crosby Elementary, both first and second grades, then moved to Harrison Elementary as the Title I Coordinator. Last school year, she served as the instructional coach at Whitewater Valley Elementary.

She earned a Master of Education degree in School Leadership from Miami University and a Master of Education in Teacher Leadership from Wright State University. She holds a 5-year Ohio professional principal license.

Recent projects that Neckel led include: facilitating grade level date and problem-solving meetings at Harrison Elementary and Whitewater Valley Elementary; presenting at the NWEA MAP Ohio Leadership Summit; creating Harrison Elementary’s summer reading program “Grow to Know,” in collaboration with Legacy and LifeSpring Churches; and implementing family reading and technology evening programs, designed to educate parents on curriculum and assessments while providing fun engaging activities for students.

Throughout her career, Neckel has received numerous honors, including: a Hamilton County Education Foundation’s Celebrate Excellence honoree in 2017; Southwest Local School District’s “teacher of the year” in 2013; and WLWT Channel 5 & WARM 98 teacher of the week in 2011.

"I am unbelievably humbled by the opportunity and am excited to join such a wonderful team of students, parents and staff members,” states Neckel.  “It is my intent to keep many of the strong Whitewater Valley Elementary traditions in place while continuing to support and enhance the good work that educational leaders, such as Mr. Lohbeck, have established.”

She adds, “I learned early in life what it means to work hard, and I promise to work diligently to make sure we focus our efforts on student success."

Neckel lives in Harrison with her husband, Tim, who is a Cincinnati Fire Lieutenant, and two children: Sydney, a senior at Harrison high school, and Lucas, a 7th grader at Harrison Jr. School.
