The Southwest Local School District was honored to have some distinguished guests visit on Tuesday, January 22.  State Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Representative Louis Blessing III, and State Board of Education member Jenny Kilgore toured Miamitown Elementary and Harrison High School.

While at Miamitown, the team observed STEAM activities in Mrs. Jefferson’s first grade class and Mrs. Sullivan’s fifth grade class.  The first graders were making igloos out of marshmallows and toothpicks, and the fifth graders were using straws and glasses of water to learn how musical tones vary based on the length of the straw and volume of water in the glass.  They also visited Mrs. Deller’s third grade class where they saw educational technology in action.

Superintendent DeMaria recognized Principal Dave Kelly and the Miamitown staff for earning the 2018 High Progress School of Honor award from the State of Ohio Department of Education, and for being recognized as a 2017 National Blue Ribbon school.

At Harrison High School the group visited some of the school’s Pipelines programs, which are career-track pathways geared to prepare students for college in their field of interest.  The High School of Business, Biomedical Science, and Engineering programs were featured along with their extra-curricular components, DECA, HOSA, and FIRST Robotics.  Also highlighted was the District’s 1:1 technology initiative, in use in a Calculus class for interactive learning.
