Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Southwest Local School District teamed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for our third district-wide fundraiser of the year, following the Day of Service in the fall and the Food and Clothing Drive at holiday time.

Students were encouraged to bring in their change to help find a cure for blood cancer.  The main mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma; and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.  Donations help families of patients pay for medicines, doctors or other expenses, and also help fund research focused on finding a cure.

Schools throughout the district participated in bake sales, penny wars, "chuck your change" in the carpool lane, extra recess incentives and more, but the highlight of the campaign were the "Teacher Dares" performed by staff members at Crosby Elementary, Harrison Junior School and Harrison High School.  From dying their hair, to eating bugs, to cracking eggs on their heads, to walking home from school... the efforts of these brave souls motivated the students to donate, and helped us live our motto of Excellence Through Relationships!  (Check out our Facebook pages to see pictures and videos from these dares... there are some you won't want to miss!)

We are grateful to the students, parents and community members who contributed to the cause, leading to a $25,092.13 donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
