Update

Our school year is off to a phenomenal start!  This is a reflection of how prepared your children are when they skip, run, and walk through our doors with pep in their step every morning.  Raising children is stressful, yet so rewarding. As parents and guardians, you are constantly worried - but so happy and in love with the little person you have created. The teachers and staff members at Miami Whitewater Elementary want to help our future generation to become the new leaders of the world — to be successful and a contributing part of society. All day, every day we nurture, love, educate, and provide fun enriching activities and then send them home safely to YOU to do it all over again.  Please read through the important points below.  Reach out to us in the office if we can help you navigate this school year by calling (513) 367-5577 or via email the principal at mia.neckel@southwestschools.org

Fall Benchmark Assessments -  We start each school year focused on our SLSD mission, “Academic and Social Growth for ALL students, EVERY DAY!”  The first step in academic growth is having a firm understanding of your child’s current academic level so we can personalize instruction and provide intervention and enrichment in smaller groups.  That’s where the growth happens!  Students in grades K-2 will be taking the AIMSWeb Plus fall benchmark composite assessment the week of August 29th.  Students in grades 1-5 will be taking the NWEA MAP fall benchmark assessment the week of September 12th.  After fall benchmark, data meetings are held with teachers and administrators to create RTi and Skill-Building groups.  More on that below!

MTSS/RTi/Skill-Building - Response to Intervention (RTI) is a team process being implemented at Miami Whitewater Elementary at all grade levels. In 4th & 5th grade this is called “Skill Building”. Universal screening and benchmark assessments for Reading and Math are conducted three times per year. This is done to evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum and instruction and to be sure students are on track to meet achievement milestones. Miami Whitewater Elementary’s multi-tiered systems of support model uses a three tier approach to instruction/intervention/enrichment:

 • Tier 1 (80% of students) -Classroom teachers will use a variety of strategies within the core curriculum to differentiate and address individual instructional needs.

 • Tier 2 (15% of students) -Based on assessment data, students who are unsuccessful in Tier 1 will be provided additional research-based interventions. Teachers and instructional aides will monitor student progress and parents/guardians will receive updates and reports.

 • Tier 3- (5% of students) -Students who continue to struggle will receive more intensive interventions from teachers and instructional aides in small group and individual settings. Parents & guardians will continue to receive updates and reports. Students not making adequate progress in the general education curriculum or with additional intervention are referred to the Intervention Assistance Team (IAT Team).

Parent/Guardian Curriculum and Tech nights – Grade level parent/guardian curriculum and technology nights allow teachers to give you a better idea of grade level expectations, explain the devices students will be using daily, curriculum and resources, and digital programming.  Free childcare is available in the gym during curriculum and tech nights.  This allows you to attend and listen without distraction!  An administrator will also be available to answer questions.

Grandparent/Special Friend Days – Save the date!  MWE Grandparent/Special Friend days are being planned by grade level for November 2, 3, & 4.  More to come about this annual event…

SCHOOLSafe ID & Smart Dismissal –  Safety is our #1 priority at Miami Whitewater Elementary.  Our new Smart Dismissal program is running smoothly, thanks to patient parents in the carpool lane at dismissal time.  We appreciate you displaying your hang tag properly.  Please remember to stay in your vehicle unless you choose to park in a marked spot in the front lot.  You cannot get out to show your hang tag to a staff member unless you park and wait along the front walkway at the main entrance.  This is causing traffic to get backed up and reducing the effectiveness and efficiency at dismissal time.  If you have any questions about Smart Dismissal, please contact Dave Kelly at dave.kelly@southwestschools.org .

Harrison HS Varsity Football Elementary Night– All SLSD Elementary students are invited to watch our high school varsity football team in action against Miamisburg on September 2nd.  Students will get in free with a paying adult.  All Harrison athletic event tickets are digital.  No cash will be accepted at the gate.  You can buy tickets in advance at https://www.harrisonwildcats.net/media/tickets  or www.bit.ly/harrisonwildcats-tickets Kickoff is at 7:00pm.  Please check out the HS athletic parking map attached to this message before Elementary Night.

One final note, a letter grade on a report card or midterm progress update does not completely tell what kind of person your child will be, but the way children represent the morals you have taught & the way they treat others tells more about the human they are turning into.  Remember how our young wildcats apply skills in real-life situations are the important factors in knowing how successful your child really is.  Have a fabulous weekend!
