SLSD News Alert

Alert

Southwest Local School District families,

This afternoon, Officer Willig, our School Resource Officer on the secondary campus, was struck by a hit-and-run driver during junior school dismissal.  The driver ignored his command to stop, attempted to pull into the line of buses leaving campus, struck Officer Willig, and then fled the scene.  We were able to use surveillance video to get a vehicle description to pass along to the Harrison Police Department, who located the vehicle a short time later.  Officer Willig was transported to UC Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.  The investigation by the Harrison Police Department is ongoing.

It goes without saying, extreme caution must be used when driving in school zones.  Pay attention to posted school zone speed limits, and those directing traffic during arrival and dismissal.  This was a senseless act that did not need to happen.  There is absolutely no place for aggressive driving, particularly in a school zone.

Please join us in keeping Officer Willig and his family in your thoughts.
