Thor

This page is dedicated to the Norwegian Thunder god, Thor. Thor's job as a Norse god was to kill all the giants that threatened the civilians and other gods. By far one of the most well-known gods is Thor. They called him the Thunder god because he had the ability to brew up bad thunderstorms that occurred by blowing through his beard.

The Norse created the myths about Thor to explain the noise of thunder. Instead of doing research to come up with a scientific reason for thunder, they came up with the god Thor and all the myths that went with him. Back then they didn't have the equipment necessary to find the scientific reason for thunder. The myths helped calm the people, it would induce panic to the community without the myths, but instead the people knew it was just Thor brewing up a storm.

Thor was the Norse god of thunder, free men , and agriculture. He traveled in a carriage drawn by goats. The goats were fierce and mean. Their names were Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. His carriage had spiked pin wheels. He had an ax hammer called the Mjollnir.

His father was Odin his mother was Jord, or Fjorgin. His wife was Sif, goddess of crops and fertility.  Thor lived in Bilskinir Castle, the place that had five hundred and forty rooms.

He had a belt of strength called Megingjord. He had iron gauntlets to help him throw the hammer. He drank lots of beer called Mjod and had a violent temper. He was portrayed as a crude, red-bearded, middle-aged warrior who relied on his immense strength rather than on his wits.

The Norse was another name for the Vikings of  Norway. They were fierce warriors who fought with rage.

Thor died in the time of Ragnarok. Thor died in battle against the wyrm of Midgard, a beast whose body covers the whole earth. Also, in that battle both Midgard and Thor died.

The Norwegian people respected Thor by wearing jewelry in the shape of an ax hammer to symbolize Thor.

Over all Thor was a great guy despite the troubles he went through and what the Norwegian people thought.
