Elizabeth 1

Elizabeth was born in Greenwich Palace on September 7, 1533. She was born to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Henry had broken with the Roman Catholic Church because the Pope did not allow him and his wife to be divorced.  On November 17, 1558, the day of her fathers death, Elizabeth was proclaimed queen.

Elizabeth I had a 45-year reign as the queen of England and Ireland (1558-1603).This period of time was known as the Elizabethan age. She encouraged great men like: Marlowe, Johnson, Beaumon, Fletcher, and Shakespeare.  They all wrote poetry and plays to entertain  people such as the Queen and commoners.  She also encouraged dancing, banquets, poetry, music, and, most of all, drama. Elizabeth was a great example  of a queen in history. She was 25 years old when she became Queen of England.

She guided the country through the second phase of the reformation, establishing a moderate Anglican foundation. She was a worldly Renaissance woman, who was in  touch with every facet of the nation's activity. She was not concerned with politics, diplomacy, and the religious struggle against the counter-reformation. She was interested in voyages, finance, literature, and arts.

At the age of 20, Elizabeth was accused of being a traitor who plotted to kill her half sister, the queen. She wrote a letter to her sister explaining that she had nothing to do with it. She was later released.

Elizabeth never married or had children. She was the last of the Tudors and died at the age of 70, after a 45 year reign. Elizabeth inherited  tattered realm: a disagreement between Catholics and Protestants tore at the very foundation of the society.

Elizabeth was interested in everything that concerned North America and she allowed the use of the name "Virginia" for the English sphere there. Because of Elizabeth, England was growing  richer.  England had a great cloth making  industry and  was developing as a maritime nation, establishing markets in the new world as well as in Europe.

Elizabeth died at the age of 70, on March 24, 1603.  She had a very wonderful  life as queen of England!    : (
