*Crosby Business Partner PCS Purified Phosphates donated $15,000 to revamp and upgrade our math and science lab.

Harrison High's Libby Graham is making a difference by selling muffins! As of now she has raised $442.00 toward building a well for a school in the Sudan. Read more.
*WVE received a grant from the Ohio Arts Council to bring in an artist for a two week residency.

At Miamitown the typical reading goal for a first quarter 5th grader is 15 AR reading points. Student Mary Kleier got 90 points with 100% comprehension!
*Southwest students and teachers (McIntyre, Peters, Carroll) raised over $500 for the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Walk
*Girls Volleyball raised over $2500 with their "Volley for the Cure" benefit.
*Harrison Elementary received the School of Promise award.
*Crosby Elementary State Physical Fitness Champs for the 13th Time!
*Harrison Junior School Cross Country League Champs.
*10 Harrison High School students attended Red Ribbon Youth Summit at Paul Brown Stadium
*Awesome Homecoming Festivities and Parade
*Mr. Baird's Cincinnati History Class sponsored a car bash during homecoming to raise funds for field trip transportation.
*Miamitown Elementary  received a Learning Links grant to get Nook Color e-readers into classrooms.
*Miamitown now has an after school chess club as well as juggling club and volleyball club.
*Crosby Science Teachers, Margie Brown and Carrie Hursh attended the Teachers, Industry, and Environment conference in Columbus sponsored by the Ohio Chemistry and Technology Council.
*Harrison Elementary has been approved to have 2 Girls on the Run teams in the Spring!
*WHHHS won 1st place at Ohio Northern University’s Model United Nations competition.  The winning delegation was France, represented by Tyler Hamant, Ashley Loechel, and Elizabeth Stone.
*Fifty-one 8th graders, who are going on the spring Washington, D.C. trip, raised $3,365.75 during a Bags-4-Bucks fundraiser.
*Harrison High School Boys CC 2nd place in FAVC. and Girls CC 3rd place in FAVC.
*The Harrison High School Ecology Club collected money for the Compassion International Water of Life Program.  We will be donating $ for 2 families in Africa to receive lifetime water filters.
*Whitewater Valley Elementary started their first "Girls on the Run" team made up of twelve 5th grade girls.
*Special Olympics Team formed at Harrison Junior School.
*
Whitewater Valley won one of the daily prizes in the Hamilton County Sumdog Math contest worth over $100.

 


Congratulations to the Harrison Wildcat Football Team under Head Coach Kent McCullough for finishing 7-3 and capturing the FAVC Buckeye League Championship.

National Make a Difference Day Project "A Night In" October 22nd

 


Congratulations to Johnny Vidal, who became the first ever Harrison High School Golfer to qualify for the Boys Ohio State Golf Tournament. He was District Runner-Up.  CONGRATULATIONS JOHNNY!

Senior Signing and Academic Awards Night, over 1 Million in scholarship money!

 

 

FAVC West Champions
In a complete TEAM effort, the girls win their 1st league title since 1998.  Emily Adams is named the FAVC Runner of the Year after winning the 200m and 400m dashes (new school record) and placing 2nd in the 100m dash.  Alecia Littleton is named the FAVC Field Event Athlete of the Year with a win in the discus and a 2nd place finish in the shot put.  Fantastic job girls!!

Congratulations to Mr. Steve Brickner and the Construction Challenge group from Harrison High School. They placed 2nd in the NATION and the Las Vegas National event March 24th. Awesome!

Only in Southwest do the teachers drive tractors!

Congratulations to the Boys Golf Team. They are FAVC League Co-Champions at 13-1.  The Wildcat team members include Johnny Vidal, Kyle Macke.  Charles Krabbe, AJ Borts,  Tyler McCowan and Joe Hursong. Coach Trevor Ward was named FAVC Coach of the Year.

 

 

At the  Model United Nations Competition at Ohio Northern University, Harrison High School took home the trophy this year, placing first out of 47 teams and winning the Superior Delegation award.  The winning team of Elizabeth Stone,  Ashley Loechel and Kurgan Horn represented the delegation of Morocco.

 

Southwest’s First Teacher Leadership Class - Teachers from across the district took part in four sessions of leadership training in the summer and after school.  The class was taught by Superintendent Chris Brown, Asst. Superintendent Meg Graham and Junior School Principal John Hamstra. This class will be offered again next summer for all staff in the district, with Leadership II offered for those graduates of this first class.

Mr. Robinson's rock band aka "Billy Hank and the Cat House Crooners", at the OMEA convention, proving that rock music is just as important as the rest. There they received a standing ovation and many positive responses to a rock band being a credited class in high school.

 Congratulations to the following track and field athletes who have advanced to the Regional Track Meet in Dayton (District place in parentheses):  Zach Lonneman (Shot Put - Champion), Ed Lehrter (Pole Vault - 3rd), Brandon Fisher (Long Jump - 3rd), Annie Robben (Pole Vault - Champion, 300m Hurdles - 2nd), Emily Adams (400m Dash - 2nd), Brittany Hall (400m Dash - 4th), 1600m Relay (Sammy Cliffe, Annie Robben, Emily Adams, Brittany Hall - Champion in a thrilling finish!) 
Harrison High Senior Annie Robben has broken 6 school records during her career in Track and Field!  Annie's vault sets a new school  and district record. 

 

Annie Robben won the regional championship in the pole vault with a vault of 11' 0". 

 

 

Southwest Local and Harrison Jr. High are proud to announce that, to date, we have collected over $3,300 for Honor Flight!  That will send ELEVEN WORLD WAR II VETS to DC!  We will continue to accept donations on their behalf for a few more weeks.   Contact Janelle Sowders at janelle.sowders@southwestschools.org with any questions.  Thank you to all who have helped support our heroes!

 Jake Rivera and Mickayla Kowalski, second graders at Hooven Elementary, report the weather daily on Hooven’s Facebook page. Tuesday they will be on the radio! At 8:30 am, they will be reporting the weather on The Eagle 99.3 FM. They get to be on the air for about an hour to an hour and a half with Bubba Bo. Tune in and give them a listen.

The Harrison Junior School cheerleaders competed on Sunday at the regional cheer competition in Mason. They are now headed to the state competition in January. They took 1st place for Junior High Non-Mount division.

 

Congratulations to the Harrison High School Cheerleaders; they placed first in this past weekend's Cheer of America competition at Wright State University.

High School "Empty Bowls" project is Thursday, Dec. 10th.
Wm. Henry Harrison High School will hold their fifth annual “Empty Bowls” project soup dinner on the evening of December 10th Profits will again be donated to the Harrison Mayor’s fund.  Students, faculty and staff will design soup bowls. This will take place in the Activity Center Lobby/Bistro area from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. prior to the Christmas concert.  Tickets to the event will be $10.00 for adults, children under 5 eat free but do not receive a ceramic bowl.  Tickets must be purchased pre-sale at the High School office. Customers will choose a bowl which will be filled with unlimited soup; beverages and desserts will also be available.  Guests will keep the bowl as a reminder of the many empty bowls around the world.

Physics is Phun!!
Once again, the Harrison High School Physics is Phun club entertains hundreds of kids at the library.

 

 


Congrats to the Harrison Girls Volleyball Team. They were DISTRICT Champions this season and Regional Semi-Finalists. They ended the season 22-4 this season! OUTSTANDING! Congratulations to Coach Amy Berwanger and all the girls.

Southwest Local School District Students Achieve National Merit Status
Ben Wilder and Sara Swartout, both seniors at William Henry Harrison High School, have been named National Merit Semifinalists. This is an honor that allows them to advance to National Merit Finalist status and opens the door to scholarship offers.
Sara is the daughter of Jeff and Linda Swartout and Ben is the son of Mark and Diane Wilder.
Senior Julie Warders has also achieved “Commended Student” status of the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Julie is the daughter of Glenn and Mary Warders.
About 230 Greater Cincinnati high school seniors are among the 16,000 semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Sara and Ben scored better than 99 percent of all the Ohio students who took the PSAT test in their junior year.
Nationally, the semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors.

 


Awesome! Harrison High Senior Brittany Wilson-Farley has earned First Place at the state track meet in the shot put with a throw of 45' 5" . She is a State Champion! Congratulations to the track staff of Scott Menze, Greg Zuleger, Nick Roth, Jon Motsinger, Steve Kucera and Jayme Light.

 

The first Super Summertime Send Off was a GREAT SUCCESS!

Over 70 Kindergarten and 1st grade students and their families from across the district attended the event held at Harrison Elementary on June 2.

Our teachers taught the families how to do reading and math activities/games at home during the summer and the families were given huge bags full of math and reading resources.   Hotdogs, chips and drinks were provided also free of charge.

Thank you to all the elementary staff and administrators who came to help!

The Harrison Wildcats Baseball Team has defeated Oak Hills 6-5 for the District Title!  Congratulations Coach Sowders and the guys for this excellent win and title. Harrison will move on into the state regional tournament; keep it rolling!

 

 


Congrats to Mr. Brickner's students on being awarded 1st place at the Ohio Energy project Senior division and earning National Finalist recognition for the National Energy Education Development Project.

 

Congratulations to the Harrison High School students that helped raise over $4000 and the Harrison Junior School students that raised over $2000 in the "Pasta for Pennies" program this Spring benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Recently Harrison Junior School Principal John Hamstra and 4 HJS students went to the Ronald McDonald House and donated almost 100 pounds of aluminum pop tabs.

 

It is with great pride that I have the honor of announcing three students that have earned the distinction of being ranked in the top 1% of all high school students in the nation.  At the minimum, these three students will all be honored with National Merit Commended Student honors. These students will now wait until September to see if they are awarded National Merit Scholar honors. Congratulations to Sara Swartout and Ben Wilder, who both attended Whitewater Valley Elementary and also to Julie Warders, who attended St. Johns. We could not be more proud of you and we thank you and your parents for bringing such great honor to our district.

Congratulations to Harrison Head Baseball Coach Shawn Sowders for his first official victory as Varsity Head Coach . He led the Wildcats to a 12-3 win over highly ranked Elder! Great job Wildcats. All that hard work does pay off!

Congratulations to Harrison High School Senior Josh Bass whose ceramic artwork "koi on a stick" won a Governor's Award of Distinction as one of the top 25 pieces of high school art. His artwork will be displayed with 275 other finalists at The Governor's Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus. There were over 12,000 entries statewide!


Six artists from the high school had their art work selected for final state competition in Columbus this past weekend!! Drawings from Paige Broughton, Eric Turner, and Greg Potter, Photos from Thomas Edison and Bridget Rowe and two Ceramic Sculptures by Josh Bass. Congratulations!

Congratulations also to Harrison's Science Olympiad team for placing fourth out of 25 high schools at regional competition on Saturday March 7th. This allows the team to compete at state level on April 18th at The Ohio State University.
