Harrison Junior School Veteran's Day 2002

Students in Mr. Sams' social studies classes were asked to write a short paper about a U.S. veteran. Many students brought in artifacts and other memorabilia from fathers, uncles and grandfathers that had served in the armed forces.

Eric Galante made an awesome display about his grandfather and he had these words to say:
" The one thing
that my Grandfather wished the children of today would know about Veteran's Day
is the true meaning of this holiday. He wants the children of today to
know that it was indeed an honor to; serve in the military, to help preserve our
way of life so everyone would have the right to attend churches, schools and
activities of their choice and the privilege to vote. We should also
remember the great acts of heroism served by all Veterans, who gave all,
including their lives, so we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today.
I have learned a lot by talking with my Grandfather about his
military service. I could tell that it also touched him. I enjoyed
conducting this interview, and I appreciate the opportunity to recognize one of
my heroes, my Grandfather, Mr. Alfred W. Posey, Jr., on this Veteran's Day."

Robbie Hursong brought in these items from his Great-Grandfather, Walter D. Bayes. He served in the US Army in WW II and the Korean War. He participated in D-Day and gathered "souvenirs" during his march across France, Belgium and Germany.

Frank A. Desalvo, grandfather of Dan McDonough, received many awards for meritorious conduct.

Norman Meyer, grandfather of Ethan Meyer, served as an Army Ranger in the 82nd Airborne. He made numerous parachute drops and received many medals.
Thanks to all students and the veterans for all their excellent work.
