First Edition, 1st Semester, 2003

Welcome...

Thanks for reading the new Harrison Junior School News Network newspaper. It is a combination of written articles, Web pages, pictures, assignments, polls and information from across the entire school.

Thanks to the following students that have helped with this project: Nicole Caldwell, Kim Rosen,  Megan Koehler, Lindsay Benson, Larren Lipps, Rachel Stevens, Brittany Simmons, Whitney Miller, Jennifer Schweitzer, Sarah Striker, Deborah Miller, Ryan Koontz,  Lacey Sowders, Kelsey Sears, Nicole Macke and Christiny Betsch.

The purpose of this newspaper is to give people an idea of all the events that have occurred here at HJS.

The school year started in August with nice weather (for August) but that abruptly turned wicked when our entire school computer network was shut down by a virus! That really caused a lot of stress to teachers and students that have grown accustomed  to using computers and the Internet everyday at school. Many teachers had to totally revise their lessons for the start of school. I was totally "lost" without my computers! Ms. Shaw and Mrs. Draughn had to cancel units that they had worked all summer on. Eventually with the help of folks like Mr. Banks and Mrs. Benson and the patience of the staff and students most of the computers were "fixed" and operations resumed.
Another interesting "twist" at the start of the year was that there was no cafeteria and the students were eating in the gym and the cafeteria/food was being served off of the stage! How weird! This is because a new huge kitchen and cafeteria were/are being built off of the old cafeteria area. Progress is being made and the project may be done by the time this reaches print!
In September the football and volleyball teams were hard at work while the cross country team was off and running. Spirit Week in October was a blast and everyone had a great time.  As the Fall sports seasons wrapped up the Winter programs began. Wrestling and basketball as well as cheerleading are well underway now. November brought its usual craziness with Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Break as well as conferences for the teachers and parents.
December is here and it brings its usual anticipation of snow days and holiday breaks! We are also waiting for the grand opening of the kitchen/cafeteria and the RETURN of Betty's cooking! (For you 7th graders that do not know any better, our cook Betty makes the best food around when she has a kitchen to cook in!) The wrestling seasons and basketball seasons will keep our student athletes very busy. Then we will all enjoy a nice long holiday break from December 20th to January 4th! When school resumes January 4th, 2004 we will have 2 weeks left in the 1st Semester. Exams will be held January 15th and 16th and the 2nd quarter will end.

Thanks for reading this First Edition of the new "Harrison Junior School News Network" newspaper. To submit future articles and stories see Mr. Sams in Room 106.

Mr. Sams, Editor

Out With the Old and in With the New

By:  Rachel Stevens

The start of every school year brings many changes such as new students, new books, new rooms, new friends, and new teachers. This year there are three new teachers at Harrison Junior High.
One of these teachers is Mrs. Weitzel. She went to the University of Cincinnati. She is very excited to be here and has enjoyed her first month here.
Mrs. Weitzel has been married for twenty-five years and has two kids. She has been teaching for four years. She has taught in Florida and says that it is different here because the students wore shorts and sandals everyday. She says that once the weather dropped to thirty degrees many students did not come to school because they thought they were going to see snow for the first time.
Mrs. Weitzel liked all her classes, but her favorite subject was home Ec. because they got to cook and make clothes. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and line dancing. (Editors note: Mrs. Weitzel is moving to Whitewater Valley Elementary school fulltime and will be leaving the Junior School soon.)
Another new teacher is Mrs. Hubbard. She went to the University of Cincinnati and The College of Mt. St. Joseph. She is very excited to be back to teaching after staying home to raise her kids.
She says that her first month here has been hectic, but exciting.
Mrs. Hubbard is married and her husband’s name is Daniel. She had two kids whose names are Josh, who’s ten, and Meghann, who’s eight. She taught for two years before her children, so this is her third year. Mrs. Hubbard also teaches at the high school. She teaches Sophomore English. She says that the high school is bigger and more spread out but other than that it’s just us only older.
Her favorite subject in school was English because she loves to read and write. Her least favorite subject was Math.
She says that she doesn’t think anything funny has happened to her in the classroom from her perspective, but sometimes her students think she’s hilarious.
The last, but not least, new teacher at HJS is Mrs. Lapp-Draginoff. She attended college at the University of Cincinnati. She has enjoyed her first month here and is very excited to be here. She’s known this school and some of the teachers all her life because her dad taught math here for almost twenty years. She used to come here in the summer and help him set up his room.
She is married and had two kids, Alex who’s three, and Kay Kay who’s one. She has been teaching for ten years. She has taught at Crosby, Miamitown, LaJoya High School in Mission, Texas, and St. Frances de Sales in East Walnut Hills.
Her favorite subject was lunch and recess because she had too much fun. As she got older, she liked German class and Language Arts. He least favorite subject was Social Studies because it was too factual. She wanted it to be more creative and interesting.
Her hobby is traveling. She says that she used to travel with her mom and dad and sister. Now she travels with her husband and kids. In total she has been to forty-eight states and thirty-four countries!

Those are all the new teachers!

Interview with a U.S. soldier by Nicole Macke

NAME: ROBERT JAMES MACKE

RANK: MAJOR

BRANCH OF SERVICE: US AIR FORCE

DATE OF SERVICE: MAY 8, 1988 TO PRESENT

JOB: PILOT- C130’S AND T-38

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE?

FLYING IN AND OUT OF IRAQ. I THINK THIS BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE C130’S AND HOW SLOW IT WAS, IT WAS AN EASY TARGET FOR THE ENEMY. I ALSO FLEW A DEAD SOLDER'S BODY OUT OF MOSUL, IRAQ. MY MOST PLEASANT EXPERIENCE WAS WHEN WE WERE DROPPING SUPPLIES INTO BOSNIA, WE WOULD PUT STUFFED ANIMALS IN THE BAILS WE WERE DROPPING FOR THE KIDS. THESE PEOPLE HAD VERY LITTLE AND LATER WHEN WE SAW FILMS OF THE AREA, TO SEE THE KIDS WITH THE STUFFED ANIMALS AND THE SMILES ON THEIR FACES MADE IT ALL WORTH IT.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A VETERAN?
IT MEANS THAT I SERVED MY COUNTRY THE BEST THAT I COULD.

HOW SO YOU FEEL ABOUT AMERICA AND PATRIOTISM?
THIS MEANS A LOT TO ME BECAUSE  I PUT MY LIFE ON THE LINE SO THAT YOU, MY WIFE, MY CHILDREN, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND EVERYONE IT THE UNITED STATES CAN LIVE A SAFER LIFE AND TO FEEL PROUD TO BE AMERICANS.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU WISH ALL KIDS KNEW ABOUT VETERAN’S DAY?
WHAT KIDS AND EVERYONE SHOULD UNDERSTAND IS WHAT THE VETERANS GAVE UP FOR THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY. THE TIME THEY HAVE TO BE AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES. THE FACT THAT THEY ARE WILLING TO GIVE UP THERE LIFE SO THAT YOU CAN LIVE IN A SAFE COUNTRY. THIS SHOULDN’T ME LOOKED AT AS A DAY YOU GET OFF SCHOOL.  INSTEAD TAKE A MINUTE AND SAY “ THANK YOU” TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN THAT HAVE SERVED THIS COUNTRY TO MAKE IT A SAFER PLACE.

Spirit Week 2003
October 13-16

Spirit Week was a great event this year. Monday was cartoon character day at Harrison Jr. High School. People dressed as their favorite cartoon characters to show their school spirit. As you can see in the pictures they really went all out. The gentlemen below are dressed for Cowboy Day.

Some of the visitors waiting in the lobby (above) and some others enjoying the brunch (below).

Junior School Hosts Annual Senior Citizens Holiday Program
On Tuesday December 2nd, Harrison Junior School hosted its annual senior citizens holiday program and brunch.  Area senior citizen groups, as well as junior school students’ grandparents, great-aunts/uncles and friends were invited to this festive occasion. The art students of Mrs. Jones decorated the lobby.

The senior citizens were greeted at the door by honor society students and escorted to the auditorium to enjoy a holiday concert.  The Junior School Band and Chorus under the direction of Dan Meeks and Shauna Thompson performed the concert.

Following the concert, senior citizens were paired with student escorts, many who were their own grandchildren, nieces or nephews.  Souvenir pictures were taken for the senior citizens.

The students then escorted their partners to the gymnasium where they were served a spectacular brunch prepared by Betty Ashcraft and crew in the newly renovated kitchen.

The tables were decorated with place mats, ornaments and cards created and provided by the Honor Society.

Each guest received a holiday card  (made by the home economics classes) as a memento.  Students were kept busy serving their “adopted grandparents”.

Tours of the building were available to all who wanted to visit classrooms with faculty and staff.

Thanks to all who made this annual program special; may you have a joyous holiday season!

"Balancing" Contest

Mr. Sams' Greek Olympics

In Mr. Sams' class  we held the Greek Olympics for a month. What we did was get into groups that were named after the Greek city states. Each day we did challenges against the other city states for points. We learned a lot of things. Like all the 12 Greek gods and goddesses, the Greek Alphabet and the map of Greece. We also learned about the war between the Greek city states Athens and Sparta called the Peloponnesian War. We also learned that the Greek Olympics were held in honor of the god Zeus. He was the main god. Zeus’s wife’s name was Hera. The twelve gods and goddesses lived on Mount Olympus. The Greek Olympics also taught us many important lessons such as: teamwork, cooperation, responsibility, motivation, fairness, loyalty, reliability, focus, and determination. Each student represented a certain City-State or Polis of Ancient Greece. They had to work together to achieve victory.  There were knowledge events, sporting events, balancing, staring, jumping and more. We had a lot of fun doing the Greek Olympics and learning about them too!

Aesop's Fables by Mr. Sams Class

Lions and The Meat
By Michele McCane
One time there was a pack of lions. Well, there wasn’t much meat to feed on. There was one piece left. As the two cubs fought over it, there was much anger. Soon since the two cubs wouldn’t share, the dad took the meat and ate it himself. And the cubs got none.

Moral: Greediness is not the way.

The Red Fin Pants
By Christiny Betsch
When the little fish went to school, all the other fish had on the same red fin pants. The little fish didn’t like them. But when one of his friends made fun of him for not having red fin pants, the little fish said,  ''I will get some soon.” Even though he hated the fin pants  he still wanted to be popular. The only way he thought he could be popular was to get those pants. That night during dinner the little fish asked his parents for some red fin pants. They said no because he already has enough fin pants. So the little fish saved his money for a week and bought a pair of red fin pants. But when he wore them to school, all the other fish made fun of him because now the other fish liked blue fin pants and not red. So the little fish still wasn’t popular even with cool pants!
Moral: Be yourself for others to like you and not just for your clothes that are cool.

The Boys and the Fish
By: Cody Rutherford
Two boys were near a stream, and some fish were jumping up from the water.  One of the boys said “I bet I can hit more fish than you”, “Your on” the other boy said.  They picked up rocks and killed many fish.  The mother of all fish swam to the shore and said “Please stop children! What is sport to you is killing to us”.
Moral: What may be fun to you, May be hurtful to another.
