The
Internet was originally developed by the U.S.
Military in the 1960's as a series of connected
or networked computers able to share important
information. In the 1970's and 80's it was
expanded to include many other government
agencies, libraries and universities. In the
1990's it was opened up to public domain. This
allowed companies like America Online ( an ISP or
Internet Service Provider) to begin operations
providing public consumers with Internet
access. The World Wide Web, which is only a part
of the Internet, got its start in 1988. It was
developed by CERN, a Swiss computer lab, as a
method of sending text, pictures, and sounds
together across the Internet. They also developed
a way to link documents or hypertext. (Hypertext
is when something is "clickable" and
you are able to link to a new page or siteon the
WWW. The Web has only been widely available to
the public since late 1993, so it is a relatively
new and growing technology. The World Wide Web
has, in just a few short years, changed the
world. Business, research, and marketing is all
done differently today because of the WWW. It is
an aspect of education that can not be
ignored. The Internet page of the HJSWeb is
designed for staff and students alike to become
acquainted with the Internet and WWW.
