“Where Children Come First”

August 29, 2008

Dear Families and Friends of Harrison Elementary,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to school for the 2008-2009 school year.  The staff is very excited about returning and getting down to the important task of educating your children.  We have a great program in store for our children this year as we balance student academic achievement, outstanding character, recognition and celebration of student achievement, and social skills.

On the note of striving for outstanding character, we would like to encourage you to think carefully before purchasing that shirt with the clever saying.  While many writers have spent time developing clever remarks and sayings that may provoke a smile, many of these sayings are not appropriate for the educational environment.  Shirts with sayings that are disrespectful to parents, teachers and the educational process in general are not preferred attire for school.  As Mr. Mangus or I encounter these shirts, we will probably have a brief conversation with the student regarding the “message” of the shirt.  We realize that most school clothing purchases have been made, therefore, we will just use these brief conversations as teachable moments.

Once again, we will make your child’s academic progress our top priority.  We ask that you be our partner in this endeavor.  Teachers will pay close attention to your child and their progress toward mastery of the State of Ohio Academic Content Standards and we would ask that you review and talk about your child’s work for the day at every opportunity.  Having positive conversations with your child helps them to develop their language skills as well as strengthening your bond with them.  So, please stay involved with the school through PTA, teacher conferences, e-mail, the planbooks (grade 3-6) and phone calls to the teachers.  We truly appreciate the opportunity to work with your children and we realize how important each day is in the scheme of their overall education.

Please do not hesitate to call the school if you have questions, needs or concerns about your child’s academic well-being.  Let’s have a great year!

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                        Stephanie L. Tillman, Principal

                                                                        Mr. Ronald Mangus

District Wellness Policy

The Southwest Local School District is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and the development of lifelong wellness practices.  In accordance with Federal Public Law (PL108.265 Section 204) the Board of Education adopted a District Wellness Policy in June, 2006.  The key aspects of this plan include:

§         Students are offered a variety of meats/poultry, fresh fruits, vegetables

and whole grains.

§         All foods made available on campus adhere to food safety and security guidelines.

§         School parties should include no more than one food or beverage that does not

meet nutrition standards.

§         For safety concerns, parents/caregivers are encouraged to provide individually

packaged commercially prepared products.

§         Fundraising efforts are supportive of healthy eating.

Smiling Faces Everywhere

It’s picture time again!  We will be taking school pictures on Monday, September 15, 2008.  Your child will need their order envelope on that day.

High School Football Tickets

You may purchase football tickets for home games in the office on Thursdays and Fridays until Noon.  Student tickets are $4.00 and adult tickets are $6.00.

Lunch Money

Every student has a cafeteria number at school.  They use this number every time they go through the cafeteria line and purchase breakfast or lunch.  For your convenience, you may send in cash or a check (payable to Harrison Elementary Cafeteria) once a week, once a month, or whenever you choose.  The money will be applied to your child’s account.  This helps eliminate lost lunch money and is more convenient for parents.  If you think you qualify for free or reduced price meals, please fill out the application in your packet and return it to school as soon as possible.  You will be notified by mail if you qualify.

If you have any questions about lunches or the cafeteria, please call the Head Cook, Mrs. Bonnie Guilfoyle.

Lunch - $1.50                Breakfast - .85              milk - .45

Visitors

We ask that all visitors sign in at the office for the safety of our students and staff.

No School

There will be no school on Monday, September 1st due to Labor Day.

Flip Flops

Just a reminder that flip flop sandals are not permitted due to the safety issues they present.

Don’t Forget To Call

If your child is sick or will not be in school for any reason, please call the office before 9:30 AM.  We always want to be sure the students are all safe and accounted for.  Students will be counted tardy if they arrive in their classroom after the 9:00 AM bell rings or if they leave school within the last hour of the school day.  Only those students with no absences and no tardies will receive perfect attendance awards.

Medications

Medicine cannot be brought to school by children.  If your child will be taking any type of medication at school, please bring it to the office and fill out a form to give us permission to administer the medication to your child.  This includes Tylenol, cough drops, creams, prescription, etc.  All medicine must be in the original container or prescription bottle.
