LATEST NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

6/2 - For the last 4 years, Chris Littleton has had an unbelievable track career.  He's been a dominant force in the throwing events in the Cincinnati area with accolades too numerous to mention.  He went to the State Meet during his sophomore and junior seasons but even with all he's done, Chris has come up short of the pinnacle of Ohio Track & Field:  a state championship.  For the last 30 years, Coach Greg Zuleger has been the heart and soul of Harrison Track & Field.  He's accomplished a lot during his career including numerous league titles, getting athletes to the Regional Meet in the throws event for the last 12 years, and a state runner-up and a 4th place finisher.  He also has come up short of the top:  coaching a state champion.  That drought for both Chris and Coach Zuleger came to an end at the OHSAA State Championships as Chris Littleton WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE DISCUS!!!!!

Over the past 4 years, a rivalry has developed between Chris and two other outstanding throwers:  Jimmie Pacifico of Vandalia-Butler and Adam Chambers of Glen Este.  They've competed against one another at numerous meets over the years including the Regional and State Meets.  Over the past two years, Pacifico has been dominant as he broke the state record in the shot put, won the shot and discus state titles as a junior, and brought a long undefeated streak into this year's State Meet.  All observers considered Jimmie unbeatable and to be a lock win both throws titles again.  Pacifico didn't disappoint on the first day of competition as he not only won the shot put, but broke the State Meet record on his last throw.  Meanwhile, the meet got off to a rough start for Chris.  He threw well below his capabilities (52' 4.75") and finished a disappointing 11th place.  Chris knew that he let the competition and setting get the best of him and that he would have to learn from his mistakes and put the day behind him.

After the competition, Chris regrouped by launching the discus against the backyard fences of some neighbors of a local high school during an afternoon practice.  He knew that he would have to step up to the level of competition if he was truly to erase the disappointment of the shot put.  Often times this year, Chris had managed to launch some truly spectacular throws in the discus but they were always in practice, or warm ups, or they landed just outside the sector lines.  Finally, when things counted the most at the biggest meet of his life, Chris was able to put everything together and performed like the champion that he and his coaches knew he was.  His opening throw was a personal best of 174' 3".  With the pressure now off, Chris could relax and really get things going.  His 2nd throw:  182' 6".  His 3rd throw:  just a paltry 168' 2".  Chris then watched as the 2nd flight went.  The pressure was now squarely on Pacifico having never been challenged like this before.  Jimmie had 2 fouls and a throw of 176' 8" in the prelims.

In the finals, Pacifico closed the gap by throwing 179' 4".  Chris responded with his 4th throw of 177' 6".  Pacifico fouled his 5th.  Chris then extended his lead with a massive throw of 183' 9".  Pacifico entered the cage for the last throw of his high school career having to match Chris or go home in second.  Jimmie's throw was good but he knew it was not long enough to beat Chris so he intentionally fouled it, making Chris the State Champ.  Congratulations to Chris and to Coach Zuleger on finally getting that elusive state title.  Chris has overcome a lot during his high school career and is truly deserving of this.  Great job Chris from all of your coaches!  We knew that you had it in you!!!!

5/25 - Two of our athletes made the trip up to Welcome Stadium to compete in the Regional Track & Field Meet.  For one of these tracksters this was old hat as it was the 4th time he'd made the trip during his brilliant career while for the other everything was new as she is just getting her track education underway.  Senior Chris Littleton competed in the shot put and discus and was able to advance to the State Meet in both events.  Chris began competition with a rough start in the discus fouling his first throw and getting a sub-par mark on his second.  Faced with the pressure of not even making the finals and having his high school discus career come to an end short of where he wanted it to, Chris came threw with a big third throw that got him 3 more in the finals.  With the pressure off, Chris performed well and placed 2nd in the event with a toss of 168' 3", just one inch short of his PR.  The shot put competition also proved to me more difficult than expected as Chris picked up an elbow injury during warm ups but was able to overcome that for a 4th place finish (54' 9.5").  This will be the 3rd straight trip (5 events) to the State Meet for Chris.  Great job Chris!  Meanwhile, freshman Brittany Hall looked to get her feet wet in Regional competition in the 200m dash.  Britt put aside her nerves and ran a fine time (26.33) placing 6th in her heat and 10th overall in the region.  Britt will be back and will be able to use the valuable experience she gained this year at the competition.

5/18 - Most of the track and field team wrapped up their season at the District Track Meet at Fairfield Stadium, but 2 of our athletes were able to advance to the Regional Meet in Dayton next week.  Freshman sprinter Brittany Hall seems to run faster each time she steps foot on the track and is peaking at just the right time of the year.  Britt raced her way into the finals of both the 100m and 200m dashes at the Wednesday prelims.  Britt's best shot seemed to be in the 100 where she had the 3rd fastest qualifying time while the 200 looked like it would be a bit of a longshot.  When the finals rolled around on Friday, things did not go as planned however.  Although she ran a fine time, Brittany ended up 5th in the 100 - the worst place to finish at the District meet as only the top 4 move on to Dayton.  Britt's back was definitely against the wall as her last shot to make it out (and get that steak dinner and regional t-shirt) came down to the 200 where the competition was fierce.  But Britt rebounded from the 100 by showing her competitiveness and desire and finishing 4th in the race.  Not only did she qualify but she ran a personal best 25.90 on the Fully Automatic Timing device.  Once the conversion factors were calculated, this time eclipsed Donna Castelli's previous hand timed school record and gave Britt the record she was hoping for.  Great job Brittany!  Elsewhere on the track for the girls, Kim Rosen gained some valuable experience at the District meet and picked up a 7th place finish in the shot put.  Kim had a fantastic rookie campaign this year!  Michelle Woelfel ended her freshman season in fine form by qualifying and placing in the finals of the 400m dash.  Megan Koehler saved her best race for the last meet of the season as well as she ran a great 1600m in a season best time of 5:35.  Ashley Hoeffer and Amanda Ruwe also turned in good performances in the finals of the 3200m run.

SHOT PUT - Rosen - 33' 1" - 7th
100m DASH - Hall - 12.83/12.89 - 5th
400m DASH - Woelfel - 1:05.0 - 8th
200m DASH - Hall - 25.90 - 4th  - School Record!

On the boy's side, Chris Littleton has performed at such a high level for such a long period of time that you sometimes take for granted how well he'll do at meets or the things that he will accomplish.  Sometimes it is best to stop and take a good hard look and admire and appreciate all that Chris has done especially as his great high school career winds down.  Chris once again impressed at the District Meet where he picked up his 2nd consecutive District Championship in the shot put.  He followed that performance up with a 2nd place finish in the discus where he lost out by just 5 inches.   Chris will march on to Dayton in both events where he'll try to secure a 3rd straight trip to the State Meet to top off his career.  Kellen Nixon also managed to score in both the throws events has he picked up two 8th place finishes.  On the track, the dynamic duo of Billy Andersson and John McCoy breezed their way into the finals of the 800m run where Billy placed 7th by running the best time of his short track career.  It's unfortunate for us that Billy must return to his native Sweden.  He's done a fine job over the last 2 months.  Finally, after a rocky start to his season, Dan Bell showed that he is back with a great run in the 3200m run.  Too bad that he doesn't have a few more weeks to run!

SHOT PUT - Littleton - 56' 10.5" - 1st (10 pts)
                  - Nixon - 45' 2" - 8th (1 pts)
DISCUS - Littleton - 166' 1" - 2nd (8 pts)
              - Nixon - 130' 3" - 8th (1 pt)
800m RUN - Andersson - 2:03.31 - 7th (2 pts)

5/11 - The girls track team traveled to Loveland to compete in the FAVC track and field meet.  The girls placed 5th at the extremely competitive meet.  The marquee event at any track meet is the 100m dash because the winner is generally considered to be the fastest runner on the track.  Brittany Hall staked her claim to that title as she raced her way to the 100m dash championship.  Britt then backed up that performance by running her best 200m dash of the year where she placed 3rd.  Brittany seems to be saving her best races for the end of the year so she should look forward to big things in the coming weeks.  Also performing well at the meet was Ashley Hoeffer who placed 4th in the 3200m run.  The FAVC has a strong tradition of long distance runners and to place at this meet is a feat that Ashley should be proud of!  Ashley also helped pace the 3200m relay team to a 4th place finish along with Megan Koehler, Sara Milner, and Amanda Ruwe.  Megan managed her best 800 time of the year even though she got knocked down halfway through her race.

The girls did pick up some bad news as Annie Robben was sidelined with an injury.  Annie and Coach Menze were forced to watch from the bench a pole vault competition that both knew she would have won.  Annie will be back vaulting as soon as she is able.  A complete list of the girls league placers are below....

The boys team was reduced to only 10 competing varsity athletes due to injuries and prom yet still managed to pull out a 4th place finish at the FAVC meet.  A strong first day of field events helped the team get out to a quick start.  Chris Littleton led the team with the finest performance he's ever brought to the track in his incredible career.  Chris opened up by winning the discus where he broke his own school and FAVC meet record by tossing the discus 168' 4".  He then followed this up with a PR in the shot put where he threw 58' 4.25", just 2 inches from the school mark owned by Ryan Flynn.  Amazingly this throw was only good enough for 2nd as Chris's league rival Adam Chambers from Glen Este bested him by just a mere 1/4 of an inch.  Even so, Littleton's performance earned him the FAVC Most Valuable Field Events Performer award for the 2nd straight year.  Congrats to Chris on all his accomplishments.

The rest of the boys followed Chris's lead by placing well in their events.  Dillon Meyers continued his impressive run in the long jump where he earned a 2nd place finish by leaping 20' 1".  Dillon would earn more honors at the running finals where he raced to a 3rd place finish in the 100m dash.  Ed Lehrter continued his steady improvement in the pole vault by vaulting to 11' 0".  This broke Eddie's previous PR.  Not too bad for a freshman!  Finally, Kellen Nixon rounded out the field event scoring by earning 4th in the shot put.  All placers are listed below....

5/5 - A handful of Harrison's best track athletes made the 2 hour trip up to Columbus to compete at the Jesse Owens Classic on the campus of The Ohio State University.  This meet is held on the site of the OHSAA State Meet and is designed to honor one of track & field's most well known, important, and accomplished athletes.  Not only did Jesse Owens win Olympic gold at the Berlin Games, he also ran for Ohio State.  This meet is a competitive one and we hoped to see a big meet atmosphere.  Although the crowd was smaller than anticipated, our athletes certainly rose to the occasion and performed well picking up several top finishes.  The results are listed below:

5/3 - A battered and bruised team went into competition this week knowing that we were going to experiment with a few events just before leagues and that a number of athletes were going to be restricted because of injuries.  Those handicaps showed at the Best of the West as the girls were only able to manage a 6th place finish while the boys picked up 5th.

Kim Rosen, hampered by a shoulder injury, found a way to PR in the shot put (34' 3.75") and pick up a 1st place finish.  Annie Robben, also restricted by an injury, used only 3 attempts to get up to 9' 0" in the pole vault.  That proved to be enough to win the competition, so she called it a day.  Brittany Hall, still trying to knock off the rust from her own injury lay-off, finished 2nd in the 100m dash and then followed that with a solid run for 2nd in the 200m.  Rachel Hiler rebounded from a rough meet the previous week by clearing 4' 8" in the high jump which was good enough for 3rd.  A complete list of scorers is below.

On the boy's side, Chris Littleton picked up 2 more 1st place finishes as he swept the throwing events once again.  Kellen Nixon was able to pick up 3rd in the shot put as well.  Dillon Meyers again showed that he is a jumper to watch.  He placed 2nd in the long jump and looks to improve on this performance at leagues and districts. Continuing his impressive run in the pole vault, freshman Eddie Lehrter vaulted to a 3rd place finish.  The boys will look to get healthy and try to make a run at the competition in the FAVC next week.

4/27 - The girls kept their momentum going by placing 2nd for the 2nd week in a row and taking home another trophy.  This time it was at the Ross Invitational against 12 other teams.  After putting in an excellent week of practice and preparation the girls came out blazing even though the weather was overcast, rainy, and a little bit on the cold side.  Kim Rosen got the ball rolling with a great showing in the throws taking home 2nd place in the shot put and 3rd in the discus.  Kim continues to be a force even though this is just her first year.  Brittany Hall then marked her return from injury.  After a 3 week layoff, Britt picked up right where she left off by running a PR in the prelims of the 100m dash (12.64) and then taking first in the event.  Then really big things started to happen.  After a week with a little extra practice and learning how to bend her pole, Annie Robben shattered the school record (and meet record) in the pole vault by clearing 10'.  (Freshman girls just do NOT clear that mark!)  Annie had people talking after her vault and she should be well over this mark by the end of the year. The sky is the limit!  The record seemed to get her adrenaline flowing as she next PR'ed in the 100m hurdles (16.58) and picked up 3rd.

After that great start to the meet, all the girls just seemed to try to out-do one another and the momentum continued to build as the meet went on.  Each did not want to let their teammates down and each race seemed to serve as inspiration for the next athlete.  The 4x200m relay team (Michelle Woelfel, Aimee Glindmeyer, Paige Heinrich, and Marcella Littleton) had an impressive comeback after an early stumble (literally) and managed to pull out a point.  Megan Koehler followed with a season best time and 4th place finish in the 1600m run as she passed two rivals in the last 200 meters.  Michelle Woelfel pulled out 3rd place in the 400m dash and re-discovered her fast times from earlier in the year.  Annie Robben followed with another PR (48.5) and 2nd place finish in the 300m hurdles.  Megan Koehler added another 4th place in the 800m run.  Brittany Hall blazed to her second PR - this one in the 200m dash (26.16) and picked up 2nd.  Ashley Hoeffer added to the tally as dropped another 10 seconds from her 3200m run time (12:23) and picked up 5th.

The meet then culminated with a fantastic run by the 4x400m relay team of Annie Robben, Michelle Woelfel, Aimee Glindmeyer, and Megan Koehler.  Not knowing what they needed to secure the team's finish, the girls ran like their lives depended on it and refused to let their teammates down.  Annie opened up with a 1:02 split (her 4th PR of the night) and gave a slight lead to Michelle over rival Oak Hills.  Michelle then ran a blazing 1:03 and opened up a sizable gap which she handed over to Aimee.  With a state champion on her heels, most in the crowd figured that it was a matter of time before Oak Hills was in the lead, but Aimee ran her best time ever in the 400 (1:04) and managed to increase the lead.  Megan then got the baton and breezed through to the finish line without being challenged.

Truly a fabulous finish to a great meet.  The girls put forth a great effort and deserved their 2nd place finish.  Their hard work throughout the season has started to pay off just at the right time as our most important meets are just around the corner.

The boys suffered more big injury blows this week losing 2 indispensable members of the team in Nick Gandy and Logan Ladd for at least 2 weeks.  That bad news did not stop the shorthanded group from coming out and competing and placing a very respectable 4th out of 12 teams at the Ross Invitational.  The star of the meet for the boys was Dillon Meyers who jumped to a personal best and 1st place finish in the long jump (20'1") and then blazed to 3 more PRs in the 100 (11.33), 200 (23.25) and as a leg on the the 4x400 meter relay team.  Dillon seems to be peaking at just the right time.  Chris Littleton continued his domination of the throwing events winning both the shot put and discus.  Billy Andersson and John McCoy continued their personal duel in the 800m run with Billy besting John this time around by mere seconds.  Billy picked up a 3rd place finish with John close behind in 5th.  Competition in practice and meets breeds success and surely we haven't seen the best from these 2 just yet.  Phil Klayer and Dan Bell joined John and Billy in the 4x800m relay and picked up a 4th place finish and nearly equaled the relay's best time of the year.  Finally, Eddie Lehrter continued his education in the pole vault with a 4th place finish where he equaled his season best (10' 6").  A complete list of scorers is below:

4/20 - The team felt right at home on Wilson A. Law Track for the Harrison Invitational as several individuals stepped up with some break through performances and season bests.  The girls team picked up their first trophy of the year as they finished 2nd.  Megan Koehler, fresh off her trip to France, ran to season bests in both the 1600 (5:44) and 800 (2:33) where she placed 3rd in both events.  Look for Megan to continue to drop time for the rest of the year.  Thrower Kim Rosen had two huge personal best performances in the shot put (33' 8.5") and discus (90' 9.5") where she picked up 2nd place finishes.  Annie Robben continues to impress.  She placed 1st in the pole vault where she nearly cleared 9' for the first time (that pesky pole brought the bar down).  Annie also picked up 2nd in both hurdle events.  Rachel Hiler's pre-season work is paying off huge dividends.  After a junior year where she was stuck at 4' 6", Rachel has mastered 4' 8" this year and now has cleared 4' 10" (good for 2nd place).  The magical 5' standard is in sight.  Ashley Hoeffer ran away from the competition in the 3200m run and coasted to a 1st place finish as did the 1600m relay team of Robben, Koehler, Michelle Woefel, and Amiee Glindmeyer.  Finally special recognition goes to Paige Heinrich and Aimee Glindmeyer both of whom racked up the mileage with a full plate of races.  Complete placers are listed below:

The boys team finished just out of the money with a 3rd place finish.  Chris Littleton continued his comeback from surgery by winning both the shot put and discus on his way to earning the Most Valuable Field Event Performer for the meet.  The standout performances of the day were turned in by Coach Motsinger's middle distance crew.  The 3200m relay team of John McCoy, the Swedish Sensation Billy Andersson, Dan Bell, and Nick Gandy easily beat the competition on the way to their best time of the year (8:45).  McCoy and Andersson backed that up with a great 1 - 3 finish in the 800m run.  Gandy continued to drop his time in the 400m dash (52.8) while Bell returned to the 3200m run with a 3rd place finish.  Frosh Edwin Lehrter had a huge break through performance in the pole vault besting his previous record by a foot.  Eddie finished 2nd with a vault of 10' 6".  Other impressive performances were given by Randy Doss with a 3rd place 100m dash and a PR in the 200m and Dillon Meyers who picked up 3rd place medals in the long jump and 200m dash.  Complete list of placers are below:

4/13 - The boys and girls competed in the very first Comet Relays at Mason against a very competitive field.  Despite the fact the previous week's weather prevented any good practice time, both teams competed well.

The boy's placed 10th out of 13 teams even though we only competed in about half of the events.  Leading the way was the throwing duo of Chris Littleton and Kellen Nixon.  Chris and Kellen combined for a first place finish in both the shot put and discus relay.  Chris so impressed everyone during his warm ups that a coach from Lebanon asked us why our "throws coach" was showing off during warm ups.  He mistook Chris for a much older and polished thrower.  Also bringing home some hardware were two other relay teams.  The 3200m relay of Nick Gandy, John McCoy, Billy Andersson, and Dan Bell posted their best time of the year (8:49) and got 3rd. Additionally, frosh Ed Lehrter and senior Phil Klayer combined for 3rd in the pole vault.  Complete list of placers below:

SHOT PUT - Chris Littleton (54'3")/Kellen Nixon (41'3") - 1st
DISCUS - Chris Littleton (148'10")/Kellen Nixon (116'6") - 1st
LONG JUMP - Dillon Meyers, Jesse Rice, Jeremy Lucy - 8th

800m RELAY - Dillon Meyers, Randy Doss, Logan Ladd, Phil Klayer - 1:38.5 - 8th

The girl's went into the meet shorthanded having 1 athlete injured and 3 off in France. Missing 4 varsity athletes led to a 13th place finish out of 14 teams.  The girl's placers are listed below:

SHOT PUT - Kim Rosen (31'10")/Melissa Metz (26'2") - 6th
POLE VAULT - Annie Robben (8'0")/Sara Milner - 6th
300m HURDLES - Annie Robben (50.4)/Michelle Woelfel (57.3) - 6th

4/2 & 4/4 - The team competed in the 8th annual Coaches Classic Track and Field meet this week and experienced the full gamut of weather conditions.  The Classic is a city-wide meet that takes place over 2 days.  Athletes must place in the top 4 at their prelim site to qualify for the finals.  Our prelim site was at Ross High School where the weather was nearly perfect and it pitted us against some of the fastest teams in the city including Winton Woods, Colerain, Princeton, and Oak Hills.  That fact did not deter the girls as they stepped right into the competition and put forth an outstanding effort that led to some great results.  Leading the way again for the girls were the frosh.  Annie Robben overcame a cold and almost falling down in the first heat of the 100m hurdles to qualify in three events.  Brittany Hall and Ashley Hoeffer were close behind as they got out in two events.  Brittany raced against some of the best competition in the city and came away with personal bests in the 100 and 200 meter dashes while Ashley came from behind on the last lap to qualify in the 3200m run.  Ashley dropped over 40 seconds from her previous time in this race and also anchored the 4x800m relay.  Other notable performers included Kim Rosen in the shot put, Sara Milner in the 1600m run, Michelle Woelfel in the 400m dash, and Amanda Ruwe with a huge personal best in the 3200m run.

Qualifiers to the finals:
SHOT PUT - Kim Rosen - 32'11"
HIGH JUMP - Rachel Hiler - 4'8"
POLE VAULT - Annie Robben - 8'0"
3200m RELAY - Megan Koehler, Sara Milner, Rachel Sheehan, Ashley Hoeffer - 11:14
100m HURDLES - Annie Robben - 16.85
100m DASH - Brittany Hall - 12.75
300m HURDLES - Annie Robben - 49.45
200m DASH - Brittany Hall - 26.26
3200m RUN - Ashley Hoeffer - 12:36

The boy's meet marked the return of two time state placer Chris Littleton to competition.  Chris had been out after re-habbing from shoulder surgery.  His return was not disappointing as he qualified easily in both the shot put and discus.  The other events saw the boys compete their best but come up short against the other teams.  Personal bests were turned in by Randy Doss in the 100m dash (11.50) and Nick Gandy in the 400m dash (53.3).

Qualifiers to the finals:
SHOT PUT - Chris Littleton - 51'8"
DISCUS - Chris Littleton - 138' 8"

The finals at Fairfield Stadium saw the weather turn brutal as the temperature dropped 40 degrees from the day before and threw in some wicked wind for added effect.  Running under these conditions could be considered either crazy or a definite character building experience.  It was a wonder that our athletes could perform as well as they did on this day.  Even still we unfortunately had to pull a number of our runners in an attempt to avoid an early season injury.  Even with all this we had 2 peformers earn runner-up status as Chris Littleton placed 2nd in the shot put and Annie Robben got 2nd in the pole vault.  Annie also raced to 5th place in the 100m hurdles.  Congrats to both Annie and Chris on a job well done under adverse conditions!

Placers:
POLE VAULT - Annie Robben - 8'0" - 2nd
100m HURDLES - Annie Robben - 17.65 - 5th

SHOT PUT - Chris Littleton - 53'6.5" - 2nd

3/30 - The girl's and boy's competed in the FAVC Relays at Winton Woods on Friday, March 30.  The girl's placed 4th as a team while the boy's came in 5th.  Weather conditions and track conditions were perfect as it was 75 and sunny on Winton Woods brand new track.

For the girl's Annie Robben came out on fire in her first high school meet.  Annie was the only girl to clear a height in the pole vault with a personal best of 8'6".  She teamed along with Sara Milner to take 1st place in the competition.  Annie also anchored the only other first place relay on the day as she brought home the baton in first in the sprint medley.  Paige Heinrich led off the relay passing off to Aimee Glindmeyer.  Each girl ran 100 meters.  Aimee then moved the stick to Brittany Hall (200m) who gave Annie a commanding lead that she never relinquished during her 400 meters.  Placing 2nd at the meet were the 6400m relay team (Megan Koehler, Sara Milner, Amanda Ruwe, and Amanda Black), the shuttle hurdles relay (Annie Robben, Michelle Woelfel, Rachel Hiler, and Sara Milner), and the high jump combo (Rachel Hiler and Brittany Hall).  Rounding out placers in the top 3 were Paige Heinrich, Marcella Littleton, Annie Robben, and Brittany Hall in the 400m relay.

Relay meets are always difficult for teams because it tests their depth.  This meet proved to be no exception and it forced some of our girls into events that weren't their specialties or favorites and sometimes had little practice at.  Special recognition goes to those girls including Brittany Hall in the high jump (with zero practice time) and Sara Milner who really branched out from her normal distance events by competing in the vault and hurdles.  Not only did she do that, but she competed in back to back to back events and still managed to come away with 3 medals.  Sara really came through when the team needed her.  Great job also to Rachel Hiler who bounced from the high jump across the field to the long jump and sandwiched 2 running events in between without a break.  Here is a complete list of placers:

SHOT PUT - Melissa Metz, Nicole Peddenpohl - 51'8" - 5th

The boy's were paced by a pair of 2nd place finishes.  The 3200 meter relay team of Nick Gandy, John McCoy, Phil Klayer and Michael Moeller turned in a solid time of 9:10 on their way to the 2nd place finish.  Phil then doubled up with Ed Lehrter in the pole vault for a combined height of 16'6" and another second place.  A strong performance was also turned in by the sprint medley relay team of Logan Ladd, Randy Doss, Dillon Meyers, and Nick Gandy whose strong anchor leg pulled out a 3rd place finish.  Dillon continues to impress in the long jump.  He launched himself 19'4" which was the second best jump of the meet.  He combined with Jesse Rice for a 3rd place finish.  Third place finishes were also turned in by the 400m relay (Ladd, Doss, Meyers, and Jeremy Lucy) and by the shot put duo of Kellen Nixon and Adam Schneider.  Here's the complete list of placers:

3/24 - The girl's and boy's track team opened their spring outdoor season with a home all-comers meet.  Participating in the meet were Mercy, Lakota West, Oak Hills, Roger Bacon, and Taylor.  The first meet is always a learning experience for those competing in their first meet and helps set a standard for everyone to improve on for the rest of the year.  We had a lot of great performances but we still have a lot of room for improvement as the year progresses.

The girl's got off to a solid start despite missing some key performers by finishing 4th in the meet.  Several athletes distinguished themselves during the meet.  In her first high school track meet, freshman Brittany Hall picked up 2 first place finishes by blowing away the competition in the 100m and 200m dashes.  Brittany ran personal bests in both races and her fast times this early in the season bode well for the future.  Sophomore Kim Rosen also competed in her first track meet and picked up a second place mark in the shot put and 3rd place in the discus.  Kim will definitely improve throughout the year as she becomes more experienced in both events.  Senior Rachel Hiler had a great all-around meet by placing in three events (high jump, long jump, and 100m hurdles).  Rachel tied her personal best in the high jump.  Finally, freshmen Sara Milner and Ashley Hoeffer also had great starts to their seasons.  Each established personal bests in all of their races.  Here is a complete list of the placers:
    SHOT PUT - Kim Rosen - 31' 1" - 2nd place
    DISCUS - Kim Rosen - 76' 4" - 3rd place
    HIGH JUMP - Rachel Hiler - 4' 8" - 3rd place
    LONG JUMP - Rachel Hiler - 13' 3" - 5th place

The boy's finished a steady 3rd place at the meet.  Several surprising performances stood out.  Freshman Ed Lehrter won the pole vault with a mark of 9' 6".  Certainly a great way to start out his career.  Fellow frosh Adam Pemberton also shocked in the vault by placing 3rd.  Nick Gandy had a great meet turning in a steady leg on the 4x8 and then blistered his way to a 2nd place finish in the 400m dash.  John McCoy picked up where he left off last year with a strong performance leading off the 4x8 before suffering from cramps later in the meet.  Finally, Dillon Meyers leaped to a 3rd place finish in the long jump (after less than one week of trying it out) and also placed in 2 other events.  Here is a complete list of the boy's placers:

    SHOT PUT - Kellen Nixon - 41' 5" - 4th place

If an athlete is in town (i.e. not on a family vacation), they are expected to be at practice during spring break.  Failure to make it to a practice will result in missing the next meet.

Mandatory practice for the track and field outdoor season begins on Monday, March 5.  All athletes who are interested in being a part of the team should be practicing by this date.  By this date all students MUST have turned in a physical form and a copy of the athletic department's training rules.  If you have been involved in another sport this year, you have already done this.  Also, athletes must turn in a copy of an EMA and a signed copy of the team expectations to Coach Menze by March 19.

The track and field informational meeting will be held on Thursday, February 22 after school in the library.  At this meeting, athletes will be able to pick up schedules, team regulations, and other important papers.
We will also be able to discuss the expectations for the upcoming season. Please make every effort to get to this meeting if you are interested in being a part of the team.

Preparations will start for the 2007 track and field season on January 3, 2007 (the first day back after the Holiday Break).  Practices are voluntary and will involve basic conditioning workouts and lifting weights.  All are welcome.  For those interested in getting some competition, we will likely participate in 3-5 indoor track meets at various colleges and universities throughout the winter leading up to the outdoor season.  In the past we have traveled to the University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, The Ohio State University, University of Findlay, and Cedarville University.  Athletes are NOT required to compete at the indoor meets.  It is only for those that choose to.  The main purpose of the "indoor season" is to get in shape for the outdoor season.  Remember that the sooner you start, the better shape you'll be in when it comes time to compete in the spring.  See Coach Menze if you have any questions about indoor track/conditioning.

Info on the indoor meets:
  • The indoor meet schedule can be found by clicking on the schedule link located on the left side of the page.
  • In order to participate in the meets, athletes must be academically eligible and have turned in a physical, the training rules, and an EMA.  In addition, in order to prevent injuries, athletes must have attended the majority of practices if they wish to compete.
  • Cost of registration for each meet must be covered by the athlete.  Costs vary from meet to meet and there will be a deadline to turn in money to Coach Menze.
  • We will be in need of parents interested in driving athletes to the meets.  Please contact Coach Menze (scott.menze@southwestschools.org) if you are willing to drive.
