MEET THE COACHES
An odd introduction to Harrison's track & field coaching staff.

Every step's an adventure...
Coach Menze and Motsinger with Joe Knue
Coach Menze (left) and Coach Motsinger (right) watch and sport pained expressions along with Sam Knue's dad, Joe, as the boy's 4x800 team attempt to qualify for regionals.  This picture was taken just before the finish and as you can see the result was very much in doubt.  A few seconds later they learned that the boys finished 4th and moved on to Dayton for the for the first time in a long time in that event.  There was much rejoicing.

How Many Coaches Can Fit Into 1 Picture??
Britt and Coaches
Apparently 5.  Here, Brittany Hall talks to Coach Menze after blowing up the
competition in
the 4x400m relay.  The coaching staff minus Coach Holbert crowd
into the shot.

Head Coach - Scott Menze -
MenzeCoach Menze is entering his 9th year as the head coach for both the boy's and girl's team. He primarily works with the sprinters and pole vaulters.  As a high school athlete, Coach Menze ran under the tutelage of former Harrison Mayor Coke Powers at Northwest High School.  He was a middle distance runner and was second team all conference during his senior year.  He unknowingly competed on the track against his future assistant Jon Motsinger during which time he despised him.  Today he likes to try to convince his athletes that he was faster and better than he really was and has learned that Mots is an okay guy.  Coach Menze teaches in the high school science department, enjoys being outdoors, and is one of only two people in recorded history to have caught a frog in all 88 counties in Ohio (seriously!).

Assistant Head Coach/Throws Coach - Greg Zuleger
Coach Zuleger is Harrison's resident track guru.  He has coached in some capacity at Harrison for the past 32 years and has forgotten more about track than the rest of the coaches can remember.  Zu started the girl's program in 1977 and was head coach of the boys for 5 league championships.  Coach Zuleger has helped guide athletes in the throwing events to the Regional track meet for the last 14 consecutive years.  He has had athletes qualify to the State meet 11 times and among them had a runner-up (Brady Morris - 1998), a 4th place finisher (Ryan Flynn - 2004), and a two-time 8th place finisher (Chris Littleton - 2006).  Zu finally reached the coaching promise land when he coached Chris Littleton to his state discus title in 2007.  He added to his legacy in 2009 by guiding Brittan Wilson-Farley through her dominant senior season and state championship in the shot put.  Outside of coaching, his greatest thrill on the track was attending the 1988 Olympic Trials and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.  Coach Zuleger teaches in the high school social studies department, enjoys a good conspiracy, and loves railing against the government.

Distance Coach - Jon Motsinger
MotsMots (here with Ashley Hoeffer and Coach Holbert) has coached track for 11 years, the last 9 at the high school.  He is a Harrison graduate and helped lead the track team to numerous league titles in the early 90's.  He was a state qualifier and is the school record holder as part of the 3200 meter relay team.  He was also a two time regional qualifier in cross country.  Mots was team MVP in 1992 and was named honorable mention all city in 1991.  His most infamous accomplishment as a track athlete was introducing the "Chris Webber time-out" to the 3200 meter run.  After high school, Mots went on to run at the University of Cincinnati.  Currently he teaches language arts at the junior school.  He is the head varsity cross country coach, is known to find soccer somewhat enjoyable from time to time, and enjoys reading, poetry, Scrabble, and all "real" sports including professional wrestling.
Sprint/Throws Coach - Nick Roth
Roth
Coach Roth (seen here with Emily Adams) is entering his 7th year as track coach at the high school. While primarily working with the sprinters and the relays, he has also coached some of the throwers.   Coach Roth was a 4 year letter winner in track and field at Taylor High School where he holds the discus record (167' 11").  He was a two time regional qualifier in the shot put and discus and also ran on the 400 meter relay team.  Coach Roth teaches in the special education department at the high school and also coaches football.  He enjoys fishing, hunting, raising quail on his compound in the wilds of Indiana, is much faster than he looks, and enjoys taking the occasional ice bath
in front of a large audience.
Hurdles/High Jump Coach - Steve Kucera
Kucera
Coach Kucera is beginning his 6th season as a track coach at Harrison after spending 4 years coaching at Sycamore Junior High.  In 2006, he guided the only hurdler in Harrison history to make it to the State Meet (Curt Weidner).  He was a self described career underachiever during his time as a high school track athlete. Coach Kucera teaches in the special education department at the high school.  He also coaches football and enjoys hunting, fishing, boating, collecting lint, dining on braised platypus, and looking at topographical maps.

Assistant Distance/Long Jump Coach - Jayme Light

Coach Light (on the right) will return to the coaching staff for her 2nd season.  Coach Light works with the long jumpers and the distance runners.  She is a graduate of Colerain High School and Northern Kentucky University where she starred on the soccer field.  She is the coach of the girl's junior varsity soccer team at the high school and was previously a member of the track staff at Colerain Junior High School.  Presently, she is teaching social studies here at Harrison High School.  Coach Light passes the time by training for mini-marathons and is pursuing her Master's Degree in Special Education.
