Foreign
Language Department Philosophy:
Citizens of today’s complex world
need to understand and communicate with people of other countries and cultures.
An experience in a different language leads to analysis of and
sensitivity to another culture, comprehension of our global interdependence,
increased self-awareness, improved understanding of one’s own language and
culture, and a degree of proficiency in another language.
Acquisition of a new language enables the student to expand skills,
self-discipline and attitudes which enhance careers and promote the desire for
lifelong learning.
Many cultures and languages have influenced the unique character of the
United States. The study of a second language develops an appreciation of
the cultural and linguistic similarity and diversity which are our heritage.
In an ever-changing global community, an awareness of other cultures and
languages continues to be a necessity.
Texts and Materials:
Mrs. McCoy and Mrs. Hayes teach from the Holt McDougal series Bien Dit! for levels I-III and Imaginez from Vista Higher Learning in level IV. These texts are supplemented with workbooks to review grammar and vocabulary as well as audio, video and CD-ROM programs that feature native speakers of French. Realia is introduced with the use of Internet websites such as news and weather websites, music and cultural information corresponding to each chapter topic. In French II, III and IV, students also keep a journal folder of their written assignments to improve written proficiency of French and in French III and IV, students keep online weblogs (blogs).
