Welcome

This web page was created to help guide you through kindergarten.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact your kindergarten teacher and we would be happy to help you in any way!

General Information

We are excited to begin the journey through kindergarten with your child this year.  Our main emphasis is identifying and forming letters and understanding phonological awareness.  Phonological awareness is hearing sounds that make up words, including individual letter sounds as well as sounds made by combinations of letters.  We will also work on math, social studies, science, health, music, art and physical education.  We want you to be a partner in your child’s education.  Please read the newsletters and do the weekly homework assignments to help develop your child’s skills.  Don’t hesitate to contact us with questions at any time.

Library

Our library day is on Tuesday.   The kindergarten students will be able to check out books.  We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help students check out books, re-shelve, etc. Please contact let me know if you're interested.

1)      Daily Behavior Chart

2)    Return to School

3)    Keep at Home

4)    Teacher/Parent Communication

5)    Homework

MOOSE books have been very successful for kindergarten students J

Grade Level Expectations

Report Cards:  Kindergarten students receive a report card at the end of each quarter.  Students will be assessed quarterly to check for mastery, improvement, and any special needs that should be addressed.  There will also be two conferences.  One in the fall and another in the winter.  We will discuss the report card, classroom behavior and DIBELS.

Homework Policy:  Homework assignments are sent home on a weekly basis.  Please complete the assignment and send whatever information back to us so we can reward your child for their hard work.

Academic Information

Language Arts:

We will be working on letter identification and phonological awareness.  Your child will discuss books that are read to them by the teacher.

The students will respond to books or given topics with pictures and inventive spelling (spelling words the way they sound).  They will be expected to print the letters of the alphabet and their first name (one capital letter and the rest lowercase letters).

DIBELS:

The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills.  http://dibels.uoregon.edu/

We use DIBELS 3-4 times a year to monitor student progress.  We will share your child’s DIBELS assessment results at conferences.
