This web page was created to guide you through the sixth grade.  There is a lot of useful information for you and your parents.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact your sixth grade teacher and we would be happy to help you in any way!

Sixth grade is an exciting year, and students will have lots of opportunities to be leaders in our school.  Students can be on safety patrol, help with the morning news show, help change the sign in front of the building, and join many clubs and organizations.  The sixth grade teachers look forward to working with the young people in their final year of elementary school and helping prepare them for their future at the Jr. School and beyond!

Field Trips:

In the spring we will take a trip to the Junior School to tour the building, eat lunch there, and meet with 6th graders from other schools.

Grade Level Expectations

Classroom Expectations – Consequences – Grading Scale

Homework Policy:        It is expected that homework be completed on a daily basis.  If a student does not have the assignment, his/her planbook will be stamped with a message so that parents will be aware of the problem when they sign it that night.  One additional day is given to turn in the assignment.  If the student fails to turn in the homework, a zero percent is recorded for the assignment.  If the homework is turned in one day late, the grade is lowered one letter grade.  For example, if the assignment earns a “B” the student will earn a “C” if is late. Sixth grade students have had years of experience with homework and are expected, as we get them ready for Junior High, to be responsible and complete their homework on time, and if not, bring in the homework the next day. Students are expected to turn in the late homework without being asked.

Academic Information

Language Arts:   (Link to reading series)

We will be using the Scott Foresman reading series again this year for reading, language, and spelling.  We will be supplementing the activities in the textbook and workbooks with other activities and assignments.

Math:  (Link to math series)

We will continue to use the Scott Foresman math series. In addition to the textbook, students will also use a Spiral Review and Test Prep workbook. We will also supplement the Scott Foresman materials with extra problem solving activities and OAT review work. Homework will be assigned almost daily, and it is essential for students to complete this practice and review work so that they don't fall behind. If students forget to bring home the textbook, you can access it online using the link above.

Science/ Health:  (Science Link)

We will be using Scott Foresman this year. The good news is that the program is set up so that students with internet access at home can access the entire textbook online, eliminating the need to carry the textbook home for assignments.  The curriculum is now aligned with the state standards, so we will be covering topics like cells, tissues, organs, and body systems; genetics and heredity; rocks and minerals; fossil fuels and alternative energy sources; and technology.  Sixth graders also complete DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) with a DARE officer to meet some of the health goals.

Social Studies:

Sixth grade social studies will focus on countries, people, and cultures around the globe!  We will also work on becoming “Better Americans!”  Students will be expected to watch the news and keep up with international current events.  Students will also complete Daily Oral Geography each morning as part of their morning work.
