Grade Level Expectations

Classroom Expectations – Consequences – Grading Scale

Homework Policy:  Planbooks are an important tool in the 5th grade both for organizational skills and communication with parents.  Students will be responsible for filling out their planbooks each day.  Each night, students are to have their parent sign the planbook once their homework is completed.  If a planbook is returned with an incomplete assignment, they will receive a “late stamp” in their book next to each section that is incomplete.  The assignment can be turned in the next day for a grade that will be lowered by one letter grade.  If the assignment is not completed and turned in within 5 days, the student will receive a “0” and detention to complete the assignment.

Academic Information

Language Arts:     (Link to reading series)

This year we will be working with the Scott Foresman series that brings reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and AR together.   We will also be reading several class novels throughout the year.

Math:

This year we will be using the Scott Foresman series along with Coach supplemental workbooks.

Science/ Health:   (Science Link)

There are 3 main areas of science covered in the 5th grade:  life science, earth/space science, & physical science.  Life science takes us on a journey through the ecosystems and how they link together.  Earth/space science revolves around the earth and it’s relation to the solar system. Physical science allows us to examine energy in its different forms such as electricity, light, sound, and thermal energy.

Health focuses on healthy living through not only physical health, but social and emotional health as well.

Social Studies:

Many exciting things are in store for our 5th grade students.  We will begin the year with a review of maps, timelines, continents, etc.  Topics covered throughout the year will be: explorers and early colonization of the Americas , Native-American Indians, American Revolution, creating a government and the Constitution, westward expansion, and Civil War.  Students will be ending the year with a study of immigration.
