Ms. Cole,

Mrs. Hammond,

& Mrs. Rouse

This web page was created to guide you through the third grade.  There is a lot of useful information for you and your parents.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact your third grade teacher and we would be happy to help you in any way!

We can’t wait to meet you and your family.  This year will be very exciting and fun.  We will be alive, alert, and awake every morning to work with your child.

Field Trips:

The third grade will take one field trip in the spring. We will either go on a B & B Riverboat cruise or visit the Freedom Center.

Grade Level Expectations

Classroom Expectations – Consequences – Grading Scale

Homework Policy:   Students need to have completed homework each day.  We will have 15-20 minutes of silent reading nightly.  Students will have other assignments to complete which should be written in their planbooks for you to check off and sign.  If it is not completed, students will do so in lunch detention.

Academic Information

Language Arts:

Literacy is everywhere.  We use the Scott-Foresman Reading series (Link to reading series) but we also use other stories and books.  Your child will learn to spell content and high frequency words, write paragraphs with complete sentences on topic.  Reading and writing are important elements to develop literacy skills and foster success in content areas (Science, Social Studies and Math).

Math:

Miss Cole teaches math to our third grade students.  A strong foundation with basic facts, calculations, and test taking skills will be emphasized throughout the year.  Our math program is published by the Scott Foresman Company and a wide variety of support materials will be integrated into lessons, to provide students with a variety of experiences, practice, and skill building challenges.

We will begin the year with a review of addition and subtraction: practicing facts, calculations and problem solving.  Students will begin to focus on mastery of multiplication facts (times tables) and division facts at the beginning of the second quarter.  These foundation skills will be used throughout the year as we develop student knowledge in the areas of numbers, number sense & operations; geometry & spatial sense; measurement, patterns, functions & algebra; and probability and data analysis.  There will be math homework most nights.  It is expected that third graders practice facts for accuracy and speed regularly and master all basic facts through: 9 + 9; subtract all sums through 18 – 9; multiply all facts through 10 x 10, with the understanding that multiplication is the opposite operation of division.

We are going to have a great year!  Try this problem and when you finish bring your solution to Miss Cole for a special reward.  A Penny Piece…

Cut or draw a big circle on a sheet of paper.  Place (or label) seven pennies on your circle as follows:

  • Place six pennies, evenly spaced, around the outer edge of the circle.  Label the top penny “A” and the others B, C, D, E & F, going clockwise around the circle.
  • Place another penny in the middle of the circle.  Label it “G.”
  • Now divide the circle into sections by drawing just three straight lines so that there is only one penny in each section.

Answer:

  • Begin by drawing a horizontal line across the circle, just below penny G.
  • Next, draw a diagonal line beginning left of penny A, passing to the right of penny G, and then just beneath penny C.
  • Then draw another diagonal line beginning at the right of Penny A, passing to the left of Penny G, and just beneath penny E.
  • Penny G should end up in a small triangle all by itself.

Good luck and remember to bring your solution to Miss Cole.

Science/ Health:  (Science Link)

This year we will be learning about many exciting new things.  We will explore the body systems and space.  We will also be learning about how machines make our lives easier.  The students always love to share their rock collections during our study of geology.  There is so much to discover about our world. and I'm looking forward to helping your child view Science as an adventure.

Social Studies:

How about learning some local history?  We will start the year navigating maps and learning about Harrison history.  Our curriculum guides us through timelines, economics, government and American symbols.
