Grade Level Expectations

Classroom Expectations – Consequences – Grading Scale

Homework Policy:   Students will be receiving a page or two of daily math and possibly a language assignment to be completed as homework.  Homework that is left at school, home, copied from a friend, etc. will result in a warning (yellow) flip.  The missing assignment will need to be made up at the next free time but the homework flip will be automatic.  This is to alleviate the teacher’s judgment on the many excuses concerning why the work is missing.

*If a student is absent, sufficient time will be given to make up the work.

Year in Review

Language Arts:   (Link to reading series)

In second grade, there will be an emphasis on reading and writing throughout the curriculum.  We’ll be working out of the Scott Foresman Reading series.  Along with time spent in guided reading groups working on various skills, your child will spend time reading independently in the Accelerated Reading program.  We will also do whole group shared readings with big books and charts.  Second graders will learn to write complete sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation.  Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns will be practiced.  Students will also identify subject and predicate of a sentence.

*After winter break, we’ll begin to learn cursive writing!!

Accelerated Reader

Requirements for all three classes are the same:

     1st and 2nd Quarter     -  1 book per week

     3rd and 4th Quarter     -  2 books per week

                                          (or 1.0 point)

*Second graders are very lucky to have the Second Grade AR Library available for AR book selection! (Thanks, Wonderful Volunteers!)

Math:

Mrs. Ange teaches math to all second graders.  Our district has newly adopted Scott Foresman math this year.

Each morning students will begin their day with a math meeting.  During the meeting children will practice skills related to calendar, time, money, counting, patterning, place value, number sense, graphing, mental computation, and problem solving.  A fact practice will be completed each morning as well.  Students are expected to master the basic facts, addition and subtraction, through 9+9 =18 and 18-9=9. Various strategies will be taught to help memorization of facts.  Parental support is needed to help fact memorization occur.

During the daily math lesson new objectives will be introduced through activity using materials, discussions, and/or group work.  Nightly homework will be assigned.

Topics covered in math include:

  • Patterns
  • Problem Solving
  • Place Value
  • Fractions
  • Regrouping
  • Geometry
  • Money
  • Measurement/Time
  • Graphing

Science/ Health: (Link to science series)

Your child will practice science and health hands-on through experimentation as well as using reading guides.  Mrs. Asbrock will teach units that include:

  • Ohio plant and animal adaptations
  • Light, shadow and sound
  • Weather
  • Moon changes / stars
  • Body systems

Social Studies:

Friendships will be heavily emphasized in Social Studies as well as in daily activities.  We would like to develop a sense of respect for one another early on.  We will also work hard to promote the school-wide goal of Conflict Resolution instruction.  We will highlight a different character trait each month and read, write about, and hopefully use it.  Some other topics Mrs. Weber will touch on throughout the year include:

¨      Family ties

¨      Timelines  (explorers, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., modern leaders, etc.

¨      Map skills

¨      Special Americans and holidays

¨      American symbols and government

¨      Our home, Earth  (continents, oceans and landforms
