Arrival/Dismissal/Absences

The class meets from 8:55 to 3:25.  Children should not arrive before 8:40 A.M.  Parents are asked to drop off and pick up children outside or in the lobby.  Please do not come to the classroom.  Your child needs to develop the independence to come and go on his/her own.  If your child is absent, you must call the office by 10:00 A.M. and send in a note when your child returns explaining the reason for the absence.  A note is also required for tardies and you must sign your child in late or out early at the office.  Click here and scroll down for the Attendance Policy.

Student Number

I have assigned your child a number to help me with passing/collecting papers and recording grades.  That is the number between 1 and 26 written on their Wildcat homework folder.  Please have your child write their name and class number on all homework.

Homework

I will be sending homework in a packet on Monday to be turned in on Friday.  It will contain math and reading papers to help review the skills for the week.  Your child is also expected to read and/or be read to for 10 minutes each day.  There is a reading log at the back of the packet to complete for this.  There will be 6-10 Spelling/Sight Words  to learn each week.  There will occasionally be homework for Science/Health and Social Studies.  Everything will be listed on my weekly newsletter so you know when things are due.  Please let your child do the homework independently so you can see how they are doing, but then go over it with them and have them fix any mistakes.  The homework should come back to me correct.  Please use the Wildcat folder to carry papers back and forth.  When it is worn out, we will replace it with one of their extra folders.  It is their responsibility to pack and unpack their school bag each day. There will be no homework on weekends.

Communication

Communication is the key to a successful year.  Please let me know if your child is dealing with a problem at home.  It may effect them at school as well.  I can most easily be reached by calling school (367-5577) from 8:00 -8:30 A.M. or 3:45-4:15 P.M.  You can also leave a message and I will return your call on a prep time or email me at Julie.Thomas@southwestschools.org. (Sometimes computers break down or I don’t have time to check email, so don’t use for urgent items!).  You will receive a weekly newsletter on Mondays to let you know everything that is happening for the week.  We will have conferences in November and February. You can access your child's grades online through Progress Book and check their Accelerated Reader test scores through an online home connection.

Lunch

You can send in money to be put on your child’s lunch account so you do not have to worry about it daily.  Put it in an envelope with your child’s name and account number.  Do not send loose cash.  They must memorize this number.  It is the number on the outside of the Wildcat folder.  They are not to bring pop or Fast Food.

Birthdays

We would be glad to celebrate your child's birthday if you wish.  Children with summer birthdays can participate in a Summer Birthday Day during the last week of school, or we can celebrate a half-birthday or un-birthday.  Please let me know ahead of time if you are sending in a birthday treat so I can plan for it during the day.  You are welcome to come and help pass things out, or you can just send them in and I will do it.

Snack

We will have a daily afternoon snack break.  Please send one in each day.  Make sure your child knows what is snack and what is lunch.  They should keep their snack separate in their bookbags.  These should be healthy snacks that can be eaten quickly such as fruit, granola bar, nuts, cheese, pretzels, fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, etc. Please do not send drinks, anything that needs a spoon, or sweets like candy, cookies or cupcakes.  During warm weather, water bottles are permitted.  Please put a sock around them to help keep condensation off of the papers.

Clothes

Your child should wear clothes that are appropriate for play and art projects.  Try to avoid slick-soled shoes.  Please write your child's name on jackets, sweaters, hats, etc.  It is hard to track down the owner sometimes!

Student of the Day

Your child will receive a note the day before their turn for Student of the Day.  On their day, they get to be line leader, pass out papers, help with calendar routines, run errands and have Show and Tell during snack time.  Please do not permit your child to bring in any toys from home unless it is their Show and Tell Day.  This prevents anything from happening to favorite toys at school.  On their special day, please help them choose one thing to share.  They should be able to tell the class three things about it.  For example, this is my teddy bear.  My grandma gave it to me.  I sleep with it.
